Master Piano Recital Series 05.07.2021

Don't miss today's DOMS concert dedicated to the memory of the greatly revered violinist and teacher, Yehonatan Berick. The concert will feature music by J.S. Bach, Vivaldi and Beethoven and performed by Anna Baksheeva (violinist and one of Mr. Berick's students) and Frédérick Lacroix (piano). The concert starts today (Wednesday Dec 9) at 12 PM on the "Music at Southminster" page: https://www.facebook.com/MusicatSouthminster/live_videos/ YEHONATAN BERICK August 30, 1968 - Oc...tober 31, 2020 On October 31, 2020, the music world lost a truly gifted violinist and beloved pedagogue. Born in Israel on August 30, 1968, the young Yehonatan was noticed by Isaac Stern and studied with Ilona Feher, later working with Henry Meyer, Kurt Sassmanshauss, and Dorothy DeLay. Prizewinner at the 1993 Naumburg competition and the 1996-1997 Prix Opus, he established himself as a teacher, soloist, and chamber musician of distinction, performing in concert series throughout North America, Europe and Israel. Yehonatan completed his studies in Tel Aviv and Cincinnati before moving to Canada in the mid-1990s. Before coming to Ottawa, he taught at the University of Michigan, McGill University, the Eastman School of Music, and the University of Toronto. Affectionately known to many as 'Big Y', he was adored for his brilliant mind, sense of humour, generous spirit, and passion for music. Being in his presence ensured laughter, sweet treats, hugs, insight, candor, and kindness. And, if you were lucky enough to find him with a fiddle in his large, yet extraordinarily agile hands, there would be music and magic. (Excerpted from The Globe and Mail) May he rest in peace and may his legacy live on.

Master Piano Recital Series 28.08.2020

I'm pleased to announce details of my forthcoming Online Summer Choral Workshop, running Jun 30 - Aug 4, for amateur choral singers seeking to make music togeth...er and develop new skills. The innovative six-week course has been specially developed to support people in sustaining artistic activity in light of COVID-19, employing a mix of live-streamed interactive rehearsals online, small-group rehearsal sessions (with social distancing) and private vocal coachings. MY GOALS The goals for the workshop are to promote a sense of community through group music making, teach inspiring pieces of choral music, offer a safe place to meet for people ready to resume singing in small groups, increase confidence using the internet as a medium for group interaction, and make artwork exploring emerging forms of virtual collaboration. OVERVIEW The course will entail six online workshop sessions, streamed through the platform of Facebook, accessible to anyone with internet access and a device such as a laptop computer or tablet. Online workshop sessions will include vocal warmups, remote group singing, guided study of workshop repertoire, explanation of the virtual performance (recording) process, vocal technique, and group interaction through live chatting, among other areas of focus. Optional small group in-person sessions of up to 10 people will be held in the Sanctuary of Southminster United Church, taking advantage of the large space to support physical distancing. Small group sessions will feel much like traditional, pre-COVID-19 choir rehearsals, and develop rhythm, breathing, listening, and singing-in-harmony skills at the core of live ensemble music making. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION There's a lot more to say but space is limited on this page! Please write to [email protected] or call 613-421-5362 to inquire or register.

Composed between 1929 and 1938, Francis Poulenc's Eight Nocturnes FP 56, form a cycle, with several of the movements depicting specific night-time scenes. Although intended for 'intermediate pianists', the music is tricky, and despite its tuneful character, not often played. Francis Poulenc (18991963) was a French composer and pianist well-known for his significant output of piano and chamber pieces, operas, ballets and Orchestra works. Hear Pianist Noah Landers play Poulenc's Nocturnes - all eight - live, tomorrow (Wednesday, June 17) at 12 PM on the Music at Southminster Facebook page.

Cécile Chaminade (18571944) was a French pianist and the first female composer to be awarded France's Légion d'Honneur. A comparatively large scale work by a composer better known for miniatures, her Sonata in C minor, Op. 21, was written early in her career as she worked to establish herself in the sophisticated musical landscape of Paris. The three-movement work written in the high-Romantic style helped to establish Chaminade as an equal among the many great French composers of her generation. Hear Pianist Noah Landers play it live tomorrow (Wednesday, June 17) at 12 PM on the Music at Southminster Facebook page.
