It was a pleasure delivering the 1st Place City of Niagara Falls Sparkle Awards to the residential and commercial winners yesterday with Councillor Chris Dabrowski Niagara Falls City Council. Winners personally expressed the reason behind their grand light displays. In previous years they’ve often illuminated to honour a loved one who passed away or to bring joy to a sick child in their neighbourhood. This year their sentiments were unanimous- they decorated to demonstrate community solidarity. They are shining their lights to brighten our dark days, giving hope & reassurance to us all. Thank you once again to all the residents & businesses for participating in this year’s Sparkle Awards Competition! I am very proud of the loving community we live in and hope everyone will brighten the corner where they are

This past Saturday, the blue spruce in front of City Hall was illuminated and proclaimed as the City of Niagara Falls' official Christmas Tree Moved to City Hall in 1978, this special tree has had a place of honour for over 40 years. Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Burke family for their careful maintenance & landscaping of their River Road home (c.1886). Pleased to honour them with the Award for 'Landscaping of a Heritage Property'. Thank you for enhancing this stunning piece of local Niagara Falls History! The Burkes are given this award for the careful maintenance and landscaping that enhances the perfect setting of this house when viewed as you travel River Road. The Doran/Marshall/Burke house was be...lieved to have been built c. 1886 for William Doran who with his brother Charles, owned the Dominion Suspender Company and were prominent businessmen of the era. This house is also a Queen Anne Revival style house with the corner turret and lots of architectural detail synonymous with the style. The carriage house is a unique aspect to the property and if you have a carriage house you must have had a carriage! The carriages would have come off River Road and up the driveway on the North side of the house and under a porte cochere. Today, that porte cochere is a magnificent outdoor patio space that adds to the overall landscaping on the property. For a property to have wonderful landscaping, it is usually a sign that hours of time and energy have been spent in making it look that way. The hydrangeas that surround the foundation during the warmer months have been part of the landscape for many generations. This house is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. Congratulations to David and Doddy for being the recipients of the 'Conservation of an Existing Heritage Building' award this afternoon! Many thanks for the continued care & preservation of your incredible Shirriff House (c. 1894). The Shirriff name is familiar for its connection to the Shirriff label on Good Morning Marmalade, along with lemon meringue pie filling. Francis Adam Shirriff, the original owner of the house began the Niagara Falls Wine Company in 1874 with Thom...as G. Bright, which would go on to become the Bright’s Wine Company. This house was built c. 1894 in the Queen Anne Revival style of architecture. It is a fine example of the fanciful style of architecture popular in Canada during the later period of the 19th Century characterised by the extensive use of architectural details and finery....Fancy, fussy & totally asymmetrical. Prominent corner towers or in this case a turret, are a great indication of a Queen Anne Revival style. Fast forward to today and the current owner, Mr. Tetrault and his partner, have so lovingly brightened up the appearance of the house and helped us all see the magnificent details that were always there, but much less noticed! Although not designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, it is listed on the City of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada - Government Municipal Register of Heritage Properties. Thank you both for helping to preserve another part of the heritage in the City.
