I have received many recent requests from residents to take action on people travelling from lockdown areas into Burlington to patronize our shops and services. In these challenging times, I stand with other mayors across Ontario, including in the Region of Halton, Mayor Rick Bonnette of Halton Hills, in asking residents to stay in their own communities for the time being. Please see my full statement below:

Today is the United Nations' International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women (https://www.un.org//obse/ending-violence-against-women-day). We've seen reports that since the COVID-19 outbreak, incidents of violence -- particularly domestic violence -- have only increased. As we near the end of Women Abuse Prevention Month in November, let's continue to shed light on this issue and remind those that need it that help is out there locally through Halton Women's Place (https://haltonwomensplace.com/).

Yesterday, I sent a letter to Burlington MPP Jane McKenna detailing updates on and the rationale behind the current and next steps related to work being done in the City of Burlington and with the Region of Halton on the Major Transit Station Area (MTSA) and Urban Growth (UGC) designations in the downtown area. I thank our local MPPs and the Province for the support they’ve provided to Burlington to date and for their continued support as we move forward in this process.

Following a formal request from the Royal Canadian Legion - Burlington Branch 60, City Council unanimously approved yesterday the naming of the area around our Burlington Cenotaph to the north of City Hall to be Veteran Square. The Burlington Cenotaph is one of the focus areas in our City where we gather to recognize and honour the sacrifices of our veterans on Remembrance Day. But our residents pay tribute to our local veterans and their sacrifices every day and naming that area Veteran Square is one simple gesture our City can make to bring the highest level of respect this place deserves in recognition of their service to our country.

I'm delighted to welcome Karen Roche as our Burlington Fire Chief! She has guided our City through a global pandemic and will continue taking us well into the future!

I was honoured today to accept the first poppy on behalf of our residents and the City of Burlington. Please pick up a poppy and wear it until Nov. 11. The Poppy Campaign is not only a fundraiser for our local Royal Canadian Legion - Burlington Branch 60 but it’s also our best way to show support for all of those who have served and not forget the sacrifices they make. This year’s #RemembranceDay service will be virtual. We ask you not to come down to the Burlington Cenotaph,... but join together as a community virtually through the live stream on Nov. 11 at Burlingtonlegion.com. Yesterday, I sent a letter to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Hon. Jonathan Wilkinson asking for his support in protecting the health of Canadians as it relates to the proposed CN intermodal project in Milton, Ont. Burlington stands in solidarity with Milton, Halton’s municipalities and the Region against this proposal due to the significant adverse health impact it will have on our communities, infrastructure and finances.

SENECA AVE. HALLOWEEN: We know there are many people that look forward to this tradition, but in light of rising COVID-19 case numbers in Burlington, please do ...not go to Seneca Avenue this Halloween. I would strongly encourage you to stay in your own neighbourhoods. I would also add that you stay home if you are feeling ill, even if you have mild symptoms, or if you are at higher risk for serious illness from COVID-19. The City will take a number of steps to ensure people do not gather on the street; paid duty officers will be stationed at either end of Seneca Avenue and barricades will be installed at the Central Library parking lot. If you do go trick or treating in your own neighbourhood here is some advice our public health officials are recommending: Avoid gatherings with people outside of your household; If you do go out trick or treating in your own neighbourhood: Only go out with members of your household; Only trick or treat outside; Both trick or treaters & people handing out candy should wear a face covering. A costume mask is not a substitute for a face covering and should not be worn over a face covering as it may make it difficult to breathe; Do not congregate or linger at doorsteps and remember to line up two metres apart if waiting. Avoid high-touch surfaces and objects; Whether collecting or handing out treats, wash your hands often and thoroughly, or use hand sanitizer; and Do not leave treats in a bucket or bowl for children to grab and consider using tongs or other similar tools to hand out treats. Let’s respect the request from the residents of Seneca Avenue and hopefully we’ll be able to celebrate there again in 2021!

Recently #BurlFire Station 5 volunteers put on a water shuttle demonstration for Mayor Marianne Meed Ward, Councillor Rory Nisan, and Councillor Angelo Bentiveg...na Ward 6. Shown here, Tanker 305 is used to deliver water, in the event of a fire, to the areas of Burlington that have no access to fire hydrants. The tanker arrives on the fire scene and pumps water into a drop tank and returns to the water fill location to fill and then shuttles the water back to the scene. This continues until the tanker is no longer required. For more information on our Tanker Shuttle accreditation visit burlington.ca/fire See more
