THANK YOU MINISTER Earlier this afternoon, the federal Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, released his decision not to designate the Highway 400-404 Link (Bradford Bypass) for a federal impact assessment. The federal minister, after careful consideration, determined that the project does not warrant an additional federal process, said Mayor Rob Keffer. We thank the minister for his decision, and reiterate our commitment to... ensuring that the town works collaboratively with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to exercise its due diligence, including addressing environmental concerns as part of the ongoing design and construction process. The Bradford Bypass is a necessary piece of infrastructure that will address traffic congestion, unlock additional employment lands and allow Bradford West Gwillimbury to improve our downtown, the Mayor added. I am grateful that along with our neighbouring municipalities, all area MPs and MPPs, and York Region and Simcoe County support this project. We are all committed to working with the Ministry of Transportation to see this project constructed as well and as soon as possible. In his letter announcing the decision today, Minister Wilkinson stated, the Project does not warrant designation and added that existing federal, provincial, and municipal legislative and regulatory processes, along with the application of standard mitigation measures will address the potential adverse effects and public concerns associated with this project. At last night’s meeting of the Mayor’s Anti-Racism Advisory Panel, we discussed the conviction of Derek Chauvin in Minneapolis courts on April 20 for the murder of George Floyd, and shared our relief at this welcomed outcome. Comments from our local Black community and panel members reflected this, such as: we saw justice served; we have hope and the verdict made me feel as though I could breathe a bit. The verdict cannot undo the terrible injustice done to George Floyd, ...but it is an important step towards accountability. Even though we are a country away, we too have been outraged by this and other killings of Black citizens in the US and around the world, and our hearts go out to their families, the Black community, and all those who continue to mourn their loss. There is still much work in front of us to bring an end to anti-Black racism. We must all work together and continue to push forward, both in our town and beyond, to bring about this change. I hope that you will join us in being part of this better future.
