SUNDAY ART DAY Quvianaqtuk Pudlat’s parents, Ningeoseak and Oodlooreak Pudlat, are both sculptors and printmakers. Quvianaqtuk is himself a sculptor of some repute, but he is a relative newcomer to the graphic arts scene in Cape Dorset. He has focused mostly on images of Arctic animals, especially birds, caribou and polar bears. In both subject matter and drawing style, his main influence is the famous Cape Dorset artist and printmaker Kananginak Pootoogook (1935-2010). SUNDAY ART DAY | In her work, Ooloosie Saila uses abstraction to depict epic Arctic landscapes. In Composition (Water, Ice and Mountains), she illustrates the mountainous terrain in and around her community of Cape Dorset, or Kinngait, which means high mountain in Inuktitut. Saila deliberately eschews the use of photography to produce her work. Choosing instead to draw from her memory and imagination, she creates heavily stylized imagery, trading straight lines ...and careful shading for curvy organic forms built up from flat, colour-blocked shapes. Here, these forms, which are flanked above and below by mirroring motifs evoking the sky and the sea, appear to bulge out of the picture plane. UN DIMANCHE UNE ŒUVRE | Hullabelly Née en 1970 à Krehir, en Turquie, Nezaket Ekici a émigré avec sa famille en Allemagne à l’âge de trois ans. Elle y a étudié l’art performatif auprès de l’artiste Marina Abramovi. Son œuvre porte sur des thèmes tels que le genre social, la religion et l’identité turco-allemande. Ekici a présenté son travail dans plus de 50 pays et 150 villes. Dans Hullabelly, elle apporte une dimension politique à sa performance en faisant tourner un... cerceau (hula-hoop) scintillant autour de sa tête voilée. Elle subvertit l’usage de ce jouet en limitant le mouvement à son cou et en gardant le cerceau en contact répété avec son foulard. Hullabelly remet en question notre façon de voir l’objet manipulé et le sujet qui le manipule. Présentée à la Biennale de Venise en 2003, la performance initiale d’Ekici durait trois heures et atteignait un point où le cerceau semblait presque étouffer l’artiste. L’œuvre faisait partie de l’exposition collective Recycling the Future, qui réunissait des installations de performeurs utilisant leur propre corps comme véhicule principal pour effectuer des actions répétitives pendant de longues périodes de temps. - Nezaket Ekici, Hullabelly, 2002. MBAM, achat, fonds Guy de Repentigny ---- SUNDAY ART DAY | Hullabelly Born in 1970 in Krehir, Turkey, Nezaket Ekici immigrated with her family to Germany at the age of three. She studied performance art with Marina Abramovi, concentrating on such subjects as social gender, religion and Turkish-German identity. She has presented her work in over 50 countries and 150 villages. In Hullabelly,, Ekici gives the everyday hula hoop a political twist as she spins the glittering hoop around her veiled head. Ekici subverts the use of the hoop by restricting its movement to her neck, where it makes repeated contact with her headscarf. In doing so, Hullabelly challenges our expectations of how an object is manipulated and of the subject who manipulates it. The initial performance was presented at the 2003 Venice Biennale. It lasted three hours, reaching a point where the hula hoop appeared to almost suffocate the artist. This work was part of a collective exhibition of performance installations entitled Recycling the Future, which involved the performance of repetitive actions for long periods of time by artists using their bodies as their primary site of expression. - Nezaket Ekici, Hullabelly, 2002 MMFA, purchase, Guy de Repentigny Fund

L’exposition prendra l'affiche dès que la réouverture des musées québécois sera possible. --- NEWLY REVEALED WORK | A never-before shown Riopelle in our next major exhibition Among the 175 works in the exhibition "Riopelle: The Call of Northern Landscapes and Indigenous Cultures", you'll discover the monumental sculpture "Fontaine" (1964-1977), which was recently restored by the MMFA's team and will be shown to the public for the first time. Andréanne Roy, art historian and guest curator of the exhibition, together with Nathalie Richard, Decorative Arts Conservator, MMFA, present the major work in this video.
