Happy World Migratory Bird day! Burrowing Owls are a migratory species. They have a long migration every year that takes them from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and into Mexico. Like many other migratory birds they face numerous survival challenges along migration.... Things you can do to help birds: Use decals on your windows to reduce bird strikes. Turn off your lights at home during migration. Light pollution can throw birds off their path. Reduce your carbon footprint to aid in the global climate crisis. Climate change is everywhere and affects all species. Increase in extreme weather events are inevitable and are extremely detrimental to migratory birds along migration. Thanks to @fisher604 for the photo of our education ambassador owl Ko'ko. #burrowingowl #recoveryprogram #mborp #endangeredspecies #migration #manitoba #makingadifference #conservationmatters #biodiversity #birdfriendly #reintroduction #owllove #owlnation #owlsofintagram #educationowls

The owls are all ready for their return to the wild. We transfer the owls tomorrow (May 3rd) to the reintroduction sites. They will be paired and once they have nested will be released back into the wild. Thank you to our program partner Assiniboine Park & Zoo for their amazing care of our feathered friends over the winter months. We will post photos later this week from the field, so stay tuned.

The burrowing owl, like many other species, blend into their environment. Can you find the owl? Burrowing Owls in Canada thrive in the grasslands. In Manitoba, the mixed-grass prairie is where we find most wild burrowing owls. It is also where we have established our release sites and where we focus are efforts for habitat enhancements including the installation of artificial nest burrows. Fun fact: Did you know that burrowing owls cannot dig their own burrow/nest? They need... the help of badgers, foxes and ground squirrels to excavate the burrow and then move on in once the diggers have moved on. The owls do some renovations to the burrows. They dig a bit and move dirt around, make the tunnel wider. They also line their nest with grass and manure. You might think this sounds like a stinky situation but it's very smart. It attracts insects (a main part of their diet) and covers the scent of newly hatched young. #mborp #burrowingowl #recoveryprogram #reintroduction #owlsofinstagram #owlnation #owllove #themoreyouknow #conservationmatters #biodiversity #grasslands #prairie

Connect with the International Owl Center and David Johnson this Sunday online. We've had the pleasure of working alongside David in Oregon in 2018 with the Global Owl Project. He's not only an owl expert but such a lovely person too.

Someone missed the memo on migration! Burrowing Owls in Canada are a migratory species. They leave the Canadian Prairies in the fall heading south to warmer temperatures and lots of yummy food. They return to Northern US and Canada in the Spring. The Western Burrowing Owl has both migratory and resident populations throughout North America. These populations can interact during the non-breeding season in the southern US and Mexico. This male owl is one of our captive-releas...e owls. He was the only owl left at the release site on our final check on October 17. Due to snowy weather, cold temps and very few insects in sight, we made the decision to bring this fella back to overwinter @assiniboineparkzoo. On occasion, we have had a few captive-release owls who do not disperse (leave) the release field. We aren't quite sure why a handful of owls over the years haven't attempted to leave. Not to worry, he will be given a chance to be wild next Spring. Colin Froese #migration #burrowingowl #mborp #owlnation #owllove #owlsofintagram #recoveryprogram #reintroduction
