Continuing off last week's Friday Fundamentals discussing wildlife-specific gear, we're going to talk about valuable gadgets and accessories that will help improve not only your photos but your experience taking them. If you are in a location where you will not be moving around, a tripod and gimbal head will give you the most consistent shots without tiring out your arms. The gimbal head is designed to flow horizontally and vertically without jumping around so that you can tr...ack moving animals and birds in flight. And, of course, having a solid tripod below is always going to be a big help. A small piece of equipment that you may not need very often here in Alberta but is good to have if you plan on being out for long periods is a rain jacket for your camera. Most jackets are designed to work while your camera is mounted on a tripod to keep water out from above, but some can be used for handheld shooting. Lastly, a good backpack is a hard accessory to beat for any photography excursion. If you're hiking out to a location where the animals are, you'll want something lightweight and big enough to carry your long lens comfortably. It's also a good idea to bring along plenty of water and snacks to keep your energy up, so ensure there's room in the bag for those things as well. These are just the items directly related to the photography side of things, so keep in mind you'll still need things like sunscreen, a hat, suitable footwear, etc. If you want to check out any of the tools we've mentioned, head down to the McBain nearest you to get a feel for them before heading out on your next adventure!
