NPH (isophane) insulin is incredibly cheap and for outpatient treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2 is just as effective as long acting insulins with less weight gain. Inpatient treatment should be basal-bolus, preferably without sliding scale insulin.

The two most common causes of pancreatitis are biliary tract obstruction and alcohol misuse. Always get an abdominal ultrasound!
