On the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin, a team of researchers at University Health NetworkDrs. Maria-Cristina Nostro, Sara Santana Nunes Vasconcelos and Yasaman Aghazadehuncover a new way to increase the survival and functionality of engrafted pancreatic cells. By co-transplanting microvessels with either donor islet cells or stem cell-derived pancreatic progenitor cells into laboratory models, they show that the microvessels are able to connect more effective...ly with the host vasculature, which in turn, improves pancreatic cell survival and glucose response. This finding is closing the gap to using human pluripotent stem cell-derived islets to manage type 1 diabetes. McEwen Stem Cell Institute industry partner, BlueRock Therapeutics, administered the first dose of pluripotent stem cell-derived dopamine-producing neurons as part of its Phase 1 clinical trial for Parkinson's disease. Exciting news for BlueRock and an important milestone for the future of cell therapy! https://bluerocktx.com//bluerock-therapeutics-announces-f/
McEwen Stem Cell Institute, Dr. Gordon Keller, is the co-recipient of this year's Institut de France Lefoulon-Delalande Scientific Grand Prize for his research in heart disease. Congratulations to Dr. Gordon Keller, on this incredible achievement!
In this latest Nature Communications publication out of the McEwen Stem Cell Institute, the team led by Dr. Gordon Keller describes a scalable protocol to develop heart muscle from human pluripotent stem cells. The authors characterize the adult-like features of these cells and demonstrate their applications in disease modelling and treatment. Congratulations to Dr. Shunsuke Funakoshi and Ian Fernandes, the lead authors on this paper!... https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-021-23329-z See more
