Check out these stretches by the Canadian Chiropractic Association! Many of us spend a HUGE portion of our day on computers, phones etc and sit in sometimes the same static position ALL DAY! We never really realize how much stress we are placing on our neck and our shoulder musculature. It is so important to be sure we are changing up our posture throughout the day! Movement is medicine!

Hey Siri, how much physical activity should I get? As some of you might have noticed, we have been posting many stories surrounding the topic of physical activity. The World Health Organization released a paper recently that outlines recommendations for all ages, as well as those with disabilities, who are pregnant or are post-partum and who may have chronic conditions! We will outline some of the recommendations over the next couple days! However, if you wish to read the f...ull paper in detail, check out the link below from the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Here is a brief outline! 1. Children and Adolescents: 5- 17 years of age - an AVERAGE of 60 min/day of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity - activities that strengthen muscle and bone should be incorporated at least 3 days a week - most of the activities should be aerobic; some examples of aerobic exercises could be walking, swimming, dancing, use of gym machines - treadmill, elliptical, jogging, running, hiking, cycling and so much more - limit the amount of time doing sedentary activities - children already spend a huge majority of their time sitting at a desk in school, it would be beneficial for them to spend time doing aerobics activities and less screen time to have multiple health benefits such as better sleep, and overall increased cardio metabolic health (which includes things such as blood pressure) 2. Adults: 18-64 years of age - all adults should be regularly physically active - adults should either complete a COMBO of moderate to high intensity activity - whether its 150 min to 300 min of moderate to high or 75-150 min of high activity throughout the week - activities that strengthen muscle and bone should be incorporated at least 3 days a week - adults can even go above these recommendations - there are many health benefits of physical activity - decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and even helping to reduce symptoms that are associated with mental health issues and help someone get an increased sleep - just like in children, there are many risks of having a sedentary behavior, that instead increase risks of certain chronic health issues or health issues in general 3. Older adults: 65+ - throughout the week, older adults should be focusing on 3 or more days of activity that focuses on functional balance and strength training - this is beneficial because it will help to enhance functional capacity and to help prevent falls, help to prevent the decline in bone health as well MAJOR TAKEAWAYS! Some movement is better than none! When starting new movement, start off slowly. You want to give your body time to adapt to change! As always, this is for educational purposes only. WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR FIRST VISIT? This post comes from one of our chiropractors, Dr. Erica Naclerio. Long post ahead, but I hope each and everyone of you take something away from this. -------------------- So, the day has come, and you have your first chiropractic visit? What should you expect?... Before your appointment starts, you will be asked to fill out some paperwork about your past, and present health complaints. During the appointment, you will be asked questions about what has brought you in so that we can determine the potential cause of the problem and how to treat it. It is also a chance for me to get to know you and your main goals. Common questions that are asked include: Surgeries or trauma you have had Your diet and exercise Medications that you may be taking How have you managed this issue? Have you seen another health care provider about this? Description of the area of concern Work life, home life, sleep Personal and family medical history After, a physical exam will be done based on your history. The idea of the physical is to identify the root cause of your concerns, so this may provoke some of your symptoms. After the physical, a thorough explanation will be given about what was found in the physical. Typically, this is done using pictures, and models of the spine. A treatment plan will then be made based on our findings, clinical experience and the best available evidence. This might even mean that based on the physical and history findings that another health care provider might be better suited to treat you, or more than one practitioner may be more beneficial. It is important to know that every treatment plan is individualized and is based on individual needs. You as a patient always have a say in your treatment and can make the decision as to what is best for you. Remember it is important to always ask questions throughout! Have a comment? DROP it below
