Does double masking work? Researchers, including our own Charles de Lannoy and Scott Laengert, recommend wearing two of your multi-layer masks, one over the other to increase protection against COVID-19 variants that may be more transmissible. Read more from The Conversation Canada:

"As we say farewell to the Year of the Rat and welcome the Year of the Ox, the Faculty wishes a Happy Lunar New Year to our students, staff, faculty, alumni and supporters who celebrate today. During the pandemic, Asian communities and individuals have been targets of racism and xenophobia. Our community stands with those affected and will continue to create a safe space for all students, staff and faculty. At McMaster Engineering, we continue to work hard as a community to ...support one another during these trying times and to celebrate resiliency and agility. Now is a time for hope, agency and looking forward. The ox is known as a hardworking zodiac sign, representing movement. Though celebrations with family and loved ones looks different this year, we hope the ox brings our communities the positive movement we need in 2021. We will continue to move forward together. Stay safe and take care," Ishwar Puri, Dean of Engineering, McMaster University #LunarNewYear #YearOfTheOx #MacEng #2021

Access to information is a right. I wanted the focus of my work to be developing tools for the masses where inclusivity is the priority, and not an afterthought. Information online needs to be made more accessible for visually impaired users, especially in a time where virtual spaces are used more than ever that's the mission behind the research from McMaster Computing and Software graduate, Guy Meyer.
Happy Movember! To celebrate, Engineering Physics, McMaster University grad students David McShannon and Dawson Bonneville created the world’s smallest moustache at the Centre for Emerging Device Technologies at McMaster. The team used direct write technology to create the moustache on silicon and the image was captured using electron microscopy. To prove the mo' is smaller than a human hair a real Movember hair is shown for scale in the last image.... Congratulations to Heather Sheardown and John Preston, two McMaster Engineering professors who were recently honoured with the Minister’s Awards of Excellence from the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities. Sheardown is a chemical engineering professor whose research has helped fight the virus. She has also biked to raise funds for COVID-19 relief in her community and supported both of her students and colleagues during the shift to online learning. Preston, associate dean of research and external relations, worked with colleagues to help create the Centre of Excellence in Protective Equipment and Materials, a key research hub for designing PPE.
Student researchers at McMaster Engineering, including Biomedical Engineering Master's student, Lyan Abdul, are paving the way for more accurate drug testing using machine learning and AI. The team, supervised by Boyang Zhang, an assistant professor of Chemical Engineering, applied machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to detect changes in the way human cells organize themselves in response to drug treatments. This will lead to faster and more accurate testing for drugs, such as medications to treat viruses and cancers. Read more: https://bit.ly/3pglYQa

The change thrust upon us by COVID-19 has given each of us the opportunity to hone these skills, to learn who we are in unforeseen circumstances, and to become more comfortable with ambiguity. All we have to do is accept the challenge head on." The theme of this year's McMaster Engineering Technology Research and Innovation Conference (METRIC) 2020 focused on adaptation. Take a look at highlights from last week's event, hosted by the EGS Engineering Graduate Society of McMaster University.
The Systemic Review of the Black Student-Athlete Experience and the McMaster Athletics Climate is now complete. The experiences of Black student athletes within... the report point to a culture of systemic anti-Black racism within the Department of Athletics and Recreation. On behalf of the University I apologize for the anti-Black racism you experienced, writes President David Farrar. I am deeply sorry that effective action was not taken to prevent this; there are no excuses for the behaviour you endured. I assure you that we are listening and that action is already being taken to implement the report’s recommendations and to begin the work with the Department and the broader university community to help us eliminate systemic racism. I encourage everyone to read the student testimonies in this report. Not only are they powerful, they will also increase your awareness and understanding of those whose experience at McMaster may have been very different than your own. Dean of Students Sean van Koughnett has launched an action plan to implement recommendations in the report. This includes hiring a senior advisor of equity, inclusion and anti-racism, who will be responsible for collaborating with key contacts within McMaster’s Black community, including a new Black Student-Athletes Council. For more information, read President Farrar’s complete letter, which links to the full report and the action plan.
Did you know that same-day delivery you're waiting on is contributing to a growing trend causing more vehicle emissions in our environment? A team of researchers from University of Toronto, York University and McMaster University including McMaster Civil Engineering Associate Professor, Saiedeh Razavi have received over $3M from NSERC / CRSNG to study this and other challenges related to shipping and consumer expectations for same-day delivery.
There are so many possibilities for these smart surfaces. We can create them to repel everything, or we can design them to interact in many beneficial ways." Researchers at McMaster University including Mechanical Engineering professor, Tohid Didar and SQI Diagnostics have created a surface that repels every other element of human blood except the critical cytokine, opening a timely window for understanding the progress of COVID-19 in individual patients.
