August 1917. The Battle of Hill 70. Canadian troops fought valiantly to gain control of the high ground against the enemy. Among them, a 43-year old sergeant na...med Frederick Hobson. The enemy counterattacked with a devastating artillery barrage. A Lewis gun in a key forward post was buried by a shell, and the crew, except for one man, was killed. With the enemy advancing on their position, Sergeant Hobson spurred into action and used a shovel to dig out the operator and his gun while under enemy fire. Although wounded, Hobson picked up the Lewis gun himself and fired relentlessly at the enemy until it jammed. He then left the gunner to clear the stoppage and advanced alone to confront the enemy. Using his bayonet and rifle butt, he single-handedly held them at bay until he was killed by a rifle shot. His sacrifice was not in vain. The Lewis gun was back in action and reinforcements had arrived to keep the hill in Canadian hands. For his acts of valour Frederick Hobson was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously. His medal is on display at the Canadian War Museum in #Ottawa. #CanadaRemembers6 June 1944-Canadian and other Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France on D-Day. http://ow.ly/Wn3E50zZgve On this day in 1944, ...Allied forces returned to occupied France to begin the process of finally liberating Western Europe during the Second World War. This momentous date has gone down in history as D-Day. Some 14,000 Canadian soldiers came ashore at Juno Beach and approximately 450 more parachuted down farther inland. It would be the beginning of 2 months of fighting in the Battle of Normandy. See more

5 May 1945-German forces in the Netherlands officially surrendered to the Canadians, ending the fighting there. #CanadaRemembers #Netherlands75 #historymatters ...http://ow.ly/GDio50zxlnn On this day in 1945, the Dutch people were finally released from German occupation during the Second World War. It was a joyous event as the country had suffered greatly during the conflict and the Canadians who played a leading role in freeing them are still warmly remembered today. Pictured are Canadian generals accepting the formal surrender of the German forces in the Netherlands in the Dutch town of Wageningen.
