At the core of Metro Prep is of course our teachers, so we're very excited about our next Metro Prep #TeacherFeature! Today's is with our very own Lena Garabedian! Lena is the Head of English Department here at Metro Prep. 1. When did you start teaching at Metro? I started teaching 5 years ago at Metro. ... 2. What’s the best advice you’ve been given about teaching? Be passionate. If the students know you are passionate about something they will be too. Young people have an amazing ability to read people. If you don't show interest or care why should they? 3. Which living person do you most admire? I really admire my parents. They have worked so hard in providing me with opportunities in life, and always supporting all the decisions I make. 4. What’s your favourite lesson to teach and the worst one? I teach a wide variety of subjects, so this is a little tricky. I would say that one of my favourites would be my short stories unit, just because it provides such a wide variety of responses from the students. 5. Which talent would you most like to have? I would love to be able to sing. My mom has the most beautiful voice and I wish that was something she passed down to me. 6. What is your greatest fear? I am not sure if this is considered a fear but - Lena, abandoned in the wilderness alone with bugs everywhere... it's a no from me. 7. What do you most value in your friends? What I value the most in my friends is their unquestionable reliability. They always show up for all my important events or when I need them. It doesn't hurt that they are also fun and love experiencing and enjoying life. 8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I would love to be able to speak every single language. To me that would be so cool. 9. If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be? I would want to come back as myself- just so I can do things differently and experience the new outcome. 10. Which other Metro teacher’s class would you like to teach - just for a day and why? I would love to teach Dominick's business class! I would love to see what stocks the students decide to invest in. What did you learn about Lena today, and who do you want to see featured next? www.metroprep.com

We all need a break once in a while. Especially after homework or essay writing - right students? 2020 has been THE year to pick up a hobby that you forgot about or always wanted to try. We want to know how you relax and take a break? Leave your suggestions in the comments below! www.metroprep.com

A #TeacherFeature you all have been waiting for! At the core of Metro Prep is of course our teachers, so we're very excited to feature Ryan Seeley today, our Vice-Principal and Head of Drama - just some of the many hats he wears. When did you start teaching at Metro? I started teaching at Metro 3 weeks into the month of September 2001. The students thought I was a supply teacher. I told them their Drama teacher just quit. I'm Ryan. Let's learn how to act. What’s the b...est advice you’ve been given about teaching? Best Advice: "Teach students, not courses." Which living person do you most admire? I admire my father. He is someone I am still trying to live up to. At 73, he is still practicing medicine, married for 48 years, and a wonderful grandfather to my daughter and nephew. What’s your favourite lesson to teach and the worst one? My favourite "lesson" is impossible to choose, as I have taught so many different classes over the years. I love introducing students to the music of Motown, the importance of Bob Dylan, the writings of Sam Shepard, and what to expect on the opening night of a play. I don't have a "worst lesson". If I don't like it, I don't teach it. Which talent would you most like to have? I would love to be able to write a proper musical score for a symphony. I think all Rock N' Roll musicians, as they age, realize that there is just something sublime about classical composition and writing music in your head and then onto the page. It baffles me. What is your greatest fear? Losing my memory. I need that. All we are, really, are memories. What do you most value in your friends? In my friends, I most value a sense of humour, intelligence, reliability, and great conversation. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I wish I'd have gotten married to Courtney earlier and had Scarlett sooner because they are the best things that have ever happened to me and, quite frankly, energy in parenting is underrated. If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be? I'd come back as Daniel Day-Lewis. Full stop. Which other Metro teacher’s class would you like to teach - just for a day and why? I'd like to teach Abha's class for a day. I love the history of Art and painters. What did you learn about Ryan today, and who do you want to see featured next? www.metroprep.com See more

LIMITED SPACES STILL AVAILABLE! We currently have spaces left for Grade 7 to 12 students for the 2020-2021 school year. Due to COVID, class sizes have been reduced and students will have timetables that will keep them in a small group of students. All students are taught their lessons in person and we have taken extra safety measures to ensure that both students and staff are safe at this time. We are always available and excited to meet with prospective families b...y phone, email, and video conference - to take a virtual tour of Metro Prep and see what we have to offer your potential Metro Prep student. Applications are still being accepted at this time. Visit www.metroprep.com to get started and start your virtual tour today or contact [email protected] with any admissions questions!

These balloons truly represent how we feel about today being the first day of school! It’s time to kick off a socially-distant school year! We have increased health and safety standards and students will have timetables that will keep them in a small group of students. Students - remember that today is a half-day and school is dismissed at 12:40 pm. ... We can't wait to see your faces - all of the Metro Prep staff will be smiling behind our masks. www.metroprep.com

At the core of Metropolitan Preparatory Academy is of course our teachers, so we're very excited about our next Metro Prep #TeacherFeature! Today's is with our very own David Sampson! David is our Grade 12 English and Law teacher at Metro Prep. When did you start teaching at Metro? January 2019 What’s the best advice you’ve been given about teaching? My grad school professor and mentor George Bevan (Queen's University) once told me that it's important to teac...h in a way that anyone can understand it, and it's those real-life connections that show your passion and get students motivated to learn. Which living person do you most admire? See above. Dr. Bevan is like a real-life Indiana Jones! What’s your favourite lesson to teach and the worst one? If I had to choose one, it would have to be my English 12 Shakespeare unit dealing with the human emotions behind the actions in Hamlet. The worst would be any grammar or formatting review, because of the class vibe - students are never in the mood to improve on their writing skills after 2 months of summer vacation! Which talent would you most like to have? I have always made an effort to learn any talent that I wished to have (especially in music), but one which will always be beyond my grasp is the visual arts. What is your greatest fear? Heights are my greatest fear. That, and running out of time on an exam. What do you most value in your friends?. I value honesty, originality and a sense of humour. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I wish I had listened to my Grade 12 French Immersion teacher and continued to study French! If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be? I would probably choose to come back as a Galapagos Tortoise. They seem to live for a long time, and hanging out near the Equator doesn't seem to be such a bad thing. Which other Metro teacher’s class would you like to teach - just for a day and why? One of Dominick's Business classes to figure out exactly why students are preoccupied with the stock exchange when I'm trying to teach them about literature! See more

School starts September 8th and we can’t wait to see your faces - but do take note that masks will be mandatory! Here are some reasons why all Metro students and members of our community should wear a mask: 1. By wearing a mask, you're protecting your community 2. Masks can prevent you from touching your face... 3. Masks provide a reminder to physically distance 4. Masks help limit the spread between individuals, objects, and surfaces Help do your part to keep all of us safe - by being diligent and wearing a mask you are protecting your community and our most vulnerable. We can’t wait for the school year to start - we truly missed our students during our virtual teaching sessions, and we are excited to be together in a safe, socially distanced school setting. Get your masks ready for school, students! #metroprep #metroathletics #metro2020 #smith #metroarcitects #metropredators See more
