Samuel Henry Brown was born in Clinton, Ontario in 1891, the youngest child of John and Mary Ann Brown. He served in the militia as a young man and later enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. Private Brown sailed overseas in October 1916 and would see action on the Western Front with the Canadian Machine Gun Corps. He fought in the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917 and lost his life on August 20, 1917, after being seriously wounded during the Battle of Hill 70. Brown was 26 years old and is buried at the Étaples Military Cemetery in France. It was November 1977. His formidable mind, which had revealed itself to thousands of Islanders in a long and distinguished career as a newspaper editor, had now become confused. "Do you know me today, Dad?" I asked.... His head turned slightly, and his eyes widened as he peered up at me. "You look familiar," he managed. In an effort to connect with him on a more personal level, I said, "Dad, do you remember your poem, "The Ballad of the Stretcher Bearers'?" He lay very still for a short time. Suddenly, in a cadence well-known to me, he recited the six verses, word for word, as a single tear fell slowly down his cheek. The 1918 Wartime Diary of Private Charles Robert Bottomley. February 15, 1918. Left guns at 12 noon for wagon lines. Got a change of tunic and pants. February 16, 1918. Started away on leave from Neun Le Mines. Fritz was shelling station. Had to beat it to Bethune Road down in boxcars and caught the leave train. Arrived in Balounge about nine p.m. Slept in the fish market all night.... February 17, 1918. Arrived in England. Three boatloads of troops arrived about 2:30 p.m. and took the train to London. Arrived in London about 5.30 p.m. Went to the Maple Leaf club, had supper and cashed my cheque. Wartime Letter from Captain Bellenden S. Hutcheson: Dear Captain Gwynn, Replying to your first series of questions, concerning the 76th Brigade of Royal Field Artillery:... The 76th Brigade was supporting the Canadian Infantry which was holding the line in front of Vimy. The brigade consisted of four batteries of 18 pounders (field guns) and one battery of 4.5 inch Howitzers. The cover of the guns, while poor was, I suppose, as good as that usually occupied by field guns in position only a few days, and the quarters of the gun that crews were in cellars near the guns, but the shells thrown at us were eight inch, and armour piercing. At least the artillerymen said that they were armour piercing, and after viewing the effects of their explosions I was in no position to argue with them. After several dugouts had been blown in, some of the uninjured personnel set to work digging out the injured while the bombardment was in progress and it was this rescue work which was carried out under scanty or no cover.
