The ultimate testament to the Midnight Riders place in the cosmos will be this lasting image: a bicycle rack, strapped to the back of the Canadian space shuttle, en route to interplanetary space. Blasting through the impenetrable darkness of the universe with nothing but a cold beer on the dashboard, a couple dilapidated-chain-rusted bikes fastened to the blasters, and a group of friends, melting their fingers on their air guitars in the sophisticated cab. When sci...ence, culture, and human curiosity converge the Midnight Riders will rise to the occasion. Envision a world where humans will be mountain biking on the moon. Where a cloud of red smoke will be left lingering after we skid on the surface of Mars. It is part of the Midnight Riders manifest destiny. Are you daring enough to take the risk? Join us for our final ride of the academic term. We will meet at 10pm outside of Yamnuska Hall, Tuesday April 29. Unhinge your rusty legs from your desk and celebrate the end of exams. This weeks instalment of the Midnight Riders Saga is going to tell the combined evolutionary story of man and two-wheeled machine; our past, present, and future. Although dates are academically conflictive, humans grudgingly lifted one foot in front of the other to get anywhere for millennia. Not only is this tiresome, it also looks dumb. For thousands of years we lived in this unenlightened state, assuming that the world was as big as our length of stride. Roughly two hundre...d years ago a genius emerged from this cultural wasteland devoid of the bicycle. This great inventor had the courage to say, "Walking is lame, I'm done with it." Fast forward to this moment in time, during the escalating action of the Midnight Riders story. Each one of us was made to move. Our evolutionary advantage of opposable thumbs has set us up for the greatest forms of transportation; we curl our gnarled hands around steel handlebars and enter a world of unlimited mobility. Simply put, our genetic coding has transformed to allow us to better operate bicycles. Without this convenient adaptation, Midnight Riders would possibly cease to exist. Or, even worse, we would be shorthanded to trekking across Northwest Calgary for a sense of adventure. This is where we are now, but the time is ripe to ask the most important question of all: where will our bicycles and incessant curiosity take us in the future? Join us for the first ride after the Northern Hemisphere perihelion on Friday, March 14th. Meet outside Yamnuska Hall at 8:30 pm.
