Peri Niam has been busy practicing her perineal tear repairs! Your midwife can help you prevent or minimize tearing from birth by: - Asking you to stop pushing when the baby’s head is visible. Instead, they will have you pant to allow the baby’s head to emerge slowly and gently. This also the skin and muscles of the perineum to stretch without tearing, - Choosing an all-fours (kneeling on hand and knees) or side lying birth position,... - Supporting the perineal tissue with a warm compress, and - Using a hands-on birth technique to manually protect the perineum. Midwives are trained to suture first degree tears (superficial skin grazes) and second degree tears (affecting the muscle of the perineum or vagina). Repairs are done using local anesthetic (aka freezing). If tears are more complicated, we consult with an obstetrician to have them repaired. Pictured above are midwife Joanna’s grandfathers. Her paternal grandfather, Harold Duke, was the Outside Foreman for the Port Arthur Shipbuilding Company. He helped build the USS border cities. On May 3, 1943 the ship was launched carrying a crew of 107, which included her maternal grandfather, John A. Nick...erson.
