Just a little back to school project I threw together real quick a few weeks ago! the colour you're seeing is a black stain on white birch. The "two tone" look comes from the grain of the wood! The darker area mainly represents the softer sections of the tree due to quick growth and the lighter sections where the stain was less absorbed represents the opposite!
