Ask the Expert... Is Embalming Required in Ontario? In Ontario, there is no requirement to embalm a body. The decision to embalm is a choice. A consumer may choose to have the body washed and dressed without embalming. However, embalming may be recommended to preserve a body between the time of death and time of visitation, burial or cremation. Source: Bearvement Authority of Ontario

Ask The Expert... What can be done with cremated/hydrolysis remains? In Ontario You May:... 1) Retain cremated/hydrolysis remains of family members 2) Bury or scatter the cremated/hydrolysis remains in a registered cemetery 3) Place the cremated/hydrolysis remains in a niche within a columbarium in a registered cemetery 4) Scatter the cremated/hydrolysis remains on private property with the consent of the land owner 5) Sign a contract with the licensed operator of a cemetery, crematorium, funeral home or transfer service to scatter the cremated/hydrolysis remains on your behalf 6) Scatter cremated/hydrolysis remains on Crown land, including land covered by water, if it’s unoccupied (e.g., provincial park, Great Lakes) and there are no signs or postings that prohibit scattering 7) Scatter cremated/hydrolysis remains on municipally-owned lands (contact the municipality to check if there are by-laws that prohibit scattering in certain areas such as municipal parks) 8) Transport cremated/hydrolysis remains outside Ontario (If travelling to another country consult the consular office for that country prior to booking transportation) Source: Bearevement Authority of Ontario See more

The Pandemic Pivot: Online Funeral Service Delivery One service that we don’t often think about until necessary is funeral services, a service which is not imm...une to the impacts of the pandemic. Talking with Trevor Charbonneau, Owner/Managing Director of Newcastle Funeral Home and Morris Funeral Chapel in Bowmanville, he states that even though we are now in stage 3, most people are still not comfortable having services or gatherings. For indoor gatherings funeral chapels are only allowed a maximum of 30% capacity of their facilities. That translates to a maximum of 30 people per gathering at Newcastle Funeral Home and 45 people at Morris Funeral Chapel. Outdoor services allow for a maximum of 100 people, however during colder weather this service model will be impacted. As an alternative to in-person services, the funeral chapels offer an option to make arrangements online and offer free streaming of funeral services. This method of service is gaining more popularity and Trevor foresees this as a sustainable option post-pandemic. Regardless of the challenges the pandemic presents, Trevor and his team will accommodate your service needs. See more
