Latest numbers from Nielsen. This accounts for exchange rate as well as a standard weight (ie - not comparing a 4L of milk to a 1 gallon), and is cross country ...(ie - not comparing the price in the remote North to a Costco using milk as a loss leader just across the Washington/BC border). And just like always, Canada allows roughly 3X (8% vs. 2-3%) more market access to dairy imports than our "free trade" trading partners. CDN$/kg Canada U.S. Milk $1.51/litre $1.27/litre Milk (rbST free)* $1.51 $1.63 Butter $9.34 $10.71 Cheddar $13.90 $14.87 Mozzarella $13.65 $14.38 Yogourt $4.98 $6.57 Source: Nielsen, 52 weeks ending May 27th, 2017. Press Release WestCoast Holsteins purchases Morsan Farms Morsan Farms and WestCoast Holsteins are pleased to announce the completion of a major transaction that sees the Morsan Farming operations in Alberta transferring hands to WestCoast Holsteins. The agreement came together quickly and easily thanks to a strong relationship that had been fostered through many previous business dealings between the Thalen and Kooyman families. Included in the agreement will be the main da...iry and heifer facilities in Alberta, as well as the cattle and the genetic inventory from Morsan Farms. Greg Thalen will stay on to help ensure continuity for the dairy in Alberta. With many of the original goals we set for Morsan Farms having been achieved the decision to sell the business is related to succession planning and creating an opportunity for the next generation to begin to build something of their own, explains Morris. For WestCoast Holsteins the agreement takes their farming operation and the genetic component of their business in a new direction. In purchasing the Morsan Farms enterprise, we gain the ability to rear our own replacement animals and ramp up our commitment to the pedigree side of our business it was a unique opportunity that achieved two of our goals at once, states Ken Kooyman. In reflecting on his years in building Morsan Farms, Morris is thankful: I would like to express my appreciation to those we’ve done business with and supported us over the years at Morsan Farms. I would like to thank them for their confidence in us and our cattle and encourage them to continue to support the new business as it transitions to WestCoast. The agreement becomes effective May 1st. See more
