Hello spring! Most (I’d guess 95%) of the laminitis cases I see in the Yukon are ponies. Ponies seem to be hard to figure out as far as feeding and pasture maintenance go. I usually see the most cases in June, so I figured I’d share a video I found helpful on the Topic. If you have ponies check it out and let me know you find any of the vets tips helpful! https://youtu.be/oEnvF5JX0Cc

In SK I was the homeschooler from the Yukon who had NEVER seen so many horse events. I had to go to every single one! Quickly learned to take my school jacket off so I could enjoy the events

Today is all about abscesses! First things first, KNOW your limits. I personally have very little experience with abscesses because my horses have never had one...or any of the horses on my service (by chance). I worked on some in school but that was a long time ago. Thankfully I know some talented farriers and veterinarians who let me reach out to them when I reach my knowledge limits. If necessary I will always refer you to a more experienced farrier, pride has no place in ...your horses care. I’ve reached out to Archibald Veterinary services for some supplies to treat the issue in case it comes up this spring. I also stocked up on some white line disease treatments as our first case developed last week. I’ll be carrying these products in my toolkit and using them on my regular trims as preventative maintenance. Hey guys! This is a common question I get asked and here are some quick answers! The ultimate answer is that the reason for cracks isn’t always blatantly obvious. If a hoof abnormality or imbalance isn’t present, ask your veterinarian too. Just remember, genetics play a huge part in hoof cracks so I won’t always have the answer as to Why this is happening. https://youtu.be/DgUtpdVs3yA
