A couple weeks ago we had a volunteer train some of our staff, volunteers, and youth on Naloxone (Narcan) administration. Naloxone is a potentially life-saving medication that can counteract some of the effects of opioids and prevent overdose. With the current opioid crisis in BC, this is such an important skill and tool to have on hand. Thank you, Levi, for providing this invaluable training for us! ... We can’t miss the milestones!! They are the accomplishments along the way, the reminders that all the hard work, sweat, tears and sacrifice are worth it and leading us somewhere. We have this dream that one day Bono will come and join us for an event. Too lofty? We know ... We have also dreamed of being able to deliver pies and Mackie Boxes to some of our local celebs! Why?? Because these sorts of goals are the milestones I’m talking about - they give us moments to celebrate along the way. They also allow the recipients to learn about what is happening in their communities around them (and the in Bono’s case ). They offer the person of influence an opportunity to get behind causes that matter to their hearts by using their own social equity and reputation to spread the word. So, on Mackie Box packing day, we made 4 extras and labelled them with the names of people we dreamed we could deliver them to. Michael Bublé, Jillian Harris, Ryan Reynolds and of course, BONO! I am not sure if our crew thinks we are half at times, but they always seem to jump on board with our sometimes absurd and lofty dreams -- haha!! Thank you, Mackie Crew, for DREAMING BIG with us!! Within a week, we were able to deliver to two of the four peeps above and we received one VERY exciting call from Michael’s assistant thanking us for the amazing gifts. She shared how Michael (or Mike, as I like to call him in my dream world where we’re great friends ) was blown away by what our young crew had accomplished and has asked to be on our mailing list. She also asked if they can buy more pies in the future?! UMMM... YES PLEASE!! If that was not enough, Jillian then shared her Mackie Box on her insta-stories. At which time, our crew and team proceeded to let out an embarrassingly loud screech and do yet another HAPPY DANCE!! See our absurd and lofty dreams sometimes come true!! What a week!! This is the fun that comes in the midst of all the tired & hard work. And we are not stopping here!!! NO way! Stay tuned to hear about our 2021 DREAMS TO COME! Michael and Jillian, thank you!! And BONO... WE ARE COMING FOR YOU NEXT! - Bobbi-Rhea (ED & BIG Dreamer)

#fridayintroductions Meet Alena! She’s been working with us for a few months now and our crew adores her! Here’s a few fun facts about Alena: 1. Her biggest fear in life is that a bird will fly into her car when the windows are rolled down ... 2. Her goal for 2021 is to do stand up comedy (if the world ever opens again) 3. Her favourite time of day is twilight because there’s something so magical about the sun almost setting See more

As a former teacher and teacher educator, I am very aware of how difficult and necessary it is to support young people beyond school. I believe Mackie’s Place beautifully bridges the crucial gap between home and school, and brings together educational and social work understandings to do what is most important for vulnerable young people provide hope! Their emphasis on supporting and equipping young people within a caring, creative, challenging and mentoring context is making a significant difference in the lives of many young people." - Kim Franklin, former Dean of Education, Trinity Western University

The poor don’t need our used blue jeans or SpaghettiOs, they need your social equity and reputation. - Shannan Martin This year, we have seen our supporters advocate for Mackie’s Place like never before! Using their social equity and influence, they have encouraged others to join the Mackie’s Place MOVEMENT and become supporters themselves. It has been so incredible to see the power of word-of-mouth and people’s passion to see the youth in our city thrive. Through Zoom pa...rties , crowdfunding campaigns, and pie deliveries , our DREAM to see Mackie’s Place become a movement is coming true. Interested in joining the movement? First comes the dream! What comes next? The way we see it, you need a few things to see that dream come to fruition: 1) a plan 2) the follow-through, and 3) some great people to help you get there. We opened in 2017 with $7000 that some amazing people chipped in for a pilot project. We predicted that this was enough for 6 months to offer a great homemade meal once a week, as well as incentives for the job skills program. Ever since we opened, we have dreamed of a day whe...n we’d have a $100,000 donor. Why? What does $100,000 mean? It meant we could provide more hours, more meals, for more kids, and it meant that we were trustworthy! Like any great journey, along the way, we have had some great disappointments. We’ve come close to closing due to cash shortages, we’ve experienced fatigue, and had moments when our hope was fading. There were times we asked the question, do we quit? Then, this Christmas - IT HAPPENED, we received that first $100,000 donation! And, what a day that was!! We literally did a happy dance. Our dream was a lofty one, no doubt!! Maybe you have some lofty ones too; maybe you’re tired and hope has dwindled. DON’T QUIT!! Will you join us in dreaming big for 2021?
