Brace for rain! Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for our area. They are predicting between 50 - 75 mm of rain tonight through tomorrow afternoon. Here's how to prepare your home for this volume: Clear your gutters and downspouts of leaves and debris;... Make sure the storm drains around your home are clear; Ensure your downspouts are properly positioned to direct water into your perimeter drain or away from your home; Be sure your sump pump is in good working order; If you are in an area with unstable power, arrange a back up power source to keep your sump pump going in the event of power loss. And, as always, we recommend having your perimeter drains inspected regularly by a qualified inspector. Keep warm and dry, and remember, we are here for any water emergencies you face.

Pumpkin spice is great; but we can agree soup is the real hero of autumn, right? Bacon corn chowder is our family's favourite. It's a magical blend of sweet and savoury, making it an ultimate comfort food on crisp evenings. We hope you enjoy this recipe, and would love for you to share your own favourite soup recipe!... BACON CORN CHOWDER: 8 slices of bacon, chopped (chorizo also works well.) 1 large onion, diced 2 large carrots, diced 4 stalks celery, diced 1 red pepper, diced (optional) tsp cumin* tsp smoked paprika* - 1 tsp chilli powder (to taste)* 4 cups corn kernels (5 ears of corn removed from cobs, or 3 cans of kernels) 4 medium yellow potatoes, cubed 6 cups chicken or vegetable stock heavy cream or milk, to taste salt and pepper, to taste cilantro, sour cream, and smoked paprika to garnish METHOD: In a dutch oven or soup pot, cook the bacon until crispy. Remove the bacon, and set aside. Add the onion to the bacon grease and sauté until soft and translucent. Add carrots, celery, cumin, smoked paprika, and chilli powder. Cook until veggies soften. Add the corn, potatoes, bacon, and soup stock. Simmer until potatoes are soft. Remove from heat and add the cream. Garnish, serve, and enjoy! *Full disclosure, I never measure my spices or seasonings. These are best guesses, but feel free to adjust to your own personal preference! The corn chowder pictured, has no cream mixed into it. We had dairy free guests that evening, and left sour cream and cream on the side so each person could adjust their own.
