2020 Ullambana Dharma Service | 2020 2020911-13 ... Sept. 11-13, 2020. Performing memorial services for past parents, ancestors, and spirits of the deceased is not an attachment to relationship or affection but a means of performing filial conduct, repaying the burden borne by our parents, reciprocating the care our parents have given to us. In the Ullambana Sutra, the story of the Buddha’s instruction to Maudgalyayana’s rescuing his mother from suffering reflects the Buddhist practice of filial conduct in a unique manner. Through nurturing the generosity in ourselves by making offering to the sangha, we dedicate the merit and virtue from the making of the offerings to our parents, present and past, to our ancestors, and to all spirits of the deceased. This is the unique Buddhist manner of practicing filial duty, in repaying gratitude to our parents and ancestors, we are at the same time cultivating generosity and lessening greed in ourselves. It has been ten months since the outbreak of the pandemic. During this difficult time, the pandemic has given us some indispensable experiences. Vulnerability gives us the courage to turn problems to hopes, enmity to peace. We are very grateful to all of you for your unconditional help and support. We are very grateful to our sangha members for their team efforts. We are very grateful to our Sifu for guiding us and practicing with us on the Bodhi path. May we sow meritorious seeds. May blessings and wisdom flourish in time. See more
