On this #ValentinesDay, we are giving you a little gem found in our Rare Books Library; The Dictionary of Love. Inspired by Jean-François Dreux du Radier's dictionary published in 1741, this book is intended to be a philosophical dictionary of love a reflection on the art of loving with its rules, codes and a method to learn or improve. Written during the Enlightenment Century, it reveals a need for the "enlightened man" to understand and master feelings. A glance #behindthescenes of the dismantling! The pandemic is forcing us to say goodbye a little earlier than expected at the exhibition. After being put forward for several months and displayed for visitors to see, artifacts and various items are removed from display cases and carefully put away.... They will now take a well-deserved break from the Museum's storage rooms.

What are these funny objects for? In the 17th and 18th centuries, all kinds of devices were used to keep warm, such as brass hand and foot warmers. The one for the hands is made up of two metal half-spheres, joined by a hinge and provided with a clasp in which we put hot embers. The latter could be carried on outings or placed on a tripod at home or in church. The wire mesh on top of the foot warmer allowed you to put your feet on it without getting burned and it was used ...a lot on the way home. What do you do to warm up after a day playing in the snow?

Did you know that Santa Claus did not always wear this mythical costume? Indeed, he has its beginnings as Saint Nicholas, a bishop of the city of Myra, Turkey, canonized by the Catholic Church. Celebrated on December 6, the feast of (Saint Nicholas in Dutch) reached America in the 17th century. He is often represented with a donkey carrying gifts for well-behaved children. Slowly was translated into English as Santa Claus and modernized when the feast ...was moved from December 6th to the 25th. It was in 1863 that Thomas Nast, illustrator and cartoonist for the New York-based Harper's Illustrated Weekly, gave him his look: swapping his clerical robes for a red suit trimmed with white fur and black belt. : Santa with His Sack of Toys II, Beth Cameron, 1995. The #tourtière is undoubtedly an emblematic dish of the holiday season in Quebec. Do you know where its name comes from? For a long time, the word referred to the baking dish rather than the dish. The tourtière was used for baking pies in the hearths of European houses where it was placed directly on the embers. Its lid also made it possible to receive embers in its centre so as to cook dishes from the bottom and from the top. Whether with meat or vegetarian, handm...ade by a loved one or bought at a local store, the tourtière remains a source of comfort to end well this tumultuous year. #RemembranceDay | Each year, the poppy is worn to honour those who have died in service. Here is a bit of history on the origin of the movement in Canada. Although the significance of the poppy can be traced back to the Napoleonic Wars, its Canadian history begins in 1915 with the famous poem composed by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. In 1918, Mrs. Moina Michael, a member of the , touched by the reading of the poem, pledge to always w...ear a poppy as a sign of Remembrance. This practice inspired Mrs. Guérin, a French woman visiting the United States, to make and sell poppies to raise money for children in war-torn areas of France. Finally, on July 5, 1921, The Royal Canadian Legion - National Headquarters officially adopted the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance.
