This banner is designed by Tsleil-Waututh artist and activist Ts’simtelot, Ocean Hyland. The title of this banner translates to It is in our blood to protect this land. At the top of the design, she says are the rivers of water and the veins of blood flowing together show our connection. The young human at the bottom represents the children and youth that stand up and protect the land and waters for themselves, their families, communities, all of the four-legged creatures ...and especially for those who aren’t able to use their voices. The two snakes at the bottom represent the bad trying to rise up; but the young child is reaching up and out for the teachings of our Ancestors to do the right thing and rise above the bad to do good. The Southgate Cleaners neon sign (c. 1959), which shown brightly at 2451 McCallum Road in Abbotsford, originally included the words "Southgate Cleaners" and "1 hr. Service/ Drive-In". Most of the signs in the Museum's collection were scrounged from the Neon Products Scrapyard by lighting activist and artist Ralf Kelman in late 1977. Other signs have come to the Museum as donations directly from sign companies and individuals over the years. #LestWeForget "This poppy is a tangible connection to the 1921 origin of our practice in Canada of wearing a poppy on Remembrance Day. Initially, the funds raised from the sale of cloth poppies went to the widows and children of France left destitute after WWI. For me, the passion, commitment and labour that Madame E. Guérin put to the cause of helping people in need through the poppy day campaign is inspirational. Poppies are now worn on November 11th in Commonwealth countri...es, alongside Belgium and France. It is moving that her work has resulted in such a tremendous legacy." - Wendy Nichols, Curator of Collections, MOV Learn more about this tangible connection to the poppy tradition in the latest feature in "From the Collection" by Scout Magazine: https://bit.ly/3kivz5n #RememberanceDay #lestweforget #Poppies #AtMOV

Artist Kee Toy Joseph, a Swxwú7mesh band member of Chinese ancestry, is inspired by both Coast Salish and Chinese art traditions. In 2019 he was commissioned to create an artwork for inclusion in MOV's newest feature exhibition, A Seat at the Table. Here is a sneak peak of his extraordinary work titled Reflection of Identities "We can transform a state of mind from being turned toward the past or future to a state of mind that is grounded in the present. At times of quests,... the forces of Mother Earth challenge us to overcome or seek balance and harmonize ourselves with all her elements which are in constant motion with seasonal change." - Artist Kee Toy Joseph Witness this unique blending of Chinese and Swxwú7mesh art forms by viewing the entire piece in A Seat at the Table at MOV, which opens to the public on November 19, 2020 Click here to learn more about the exhibition project: https://bit.ly/3kxTluY #ASeatAtTheTableBC # #ChineseCanadian #Staytuned #NewAtMOV
