Authority, Agency or Abuse? Why do some people in authority think that theirs is the only life that matters? They will apply every agency at their disposal to meet their personal obligations while not compromising their tenure at work. I mean, they'll change appointments, shift schedules around and modify work hours or location to accommodate whatever comes up in their lives. But woe betide you, you're under the authority of such a boss and some life emergency comes up. You'...re screwed, through and through because an emergency puts your employment in jeopardy! I'm talking about the kind of boss who asks things like: 1. Can't you do this at another time? 2. Have you finished your quota yet? 3. Do you really need to be there? Can't your family do it without you? 4. General unreasonable and arbitrary demands and questions. I mean really! There's that concept of empathy that I think some folks just don't ever get a grasp of, or maybe, it's a personality flaw or a mental health problem. Whatever the case, I think it's a simple matter to put oneself in the other's shoe. It will go a long way toward developing that elusive empathy. Such bosses should just think how frantically they work to change things around when it concerns them, and thus, make room for their employees too. Sure, some privileges come with being a boss but when all is said and done, bosses and underlings are just people. Neither one's life is of more import than the other's. So let's try sometimes to accommodate. It's a critical word in management. If managers learn it and use it judiciously the rewards are immeasurable. A few rewards are: 1. Your staff will work extra time here and there and not ask for OT pay. 2. You'll create a very loyal team 3. Your staff will put in their best, not just their time. 4. You'll increase productivity while creating a congenial workplace. If you're in management and you read this, please ponder. Should any of it sound like you, please consider changing the way you react to requests for personal time, especially when you don't understand. Remember, you're not only responsible for the actions you initiate but you're even more responsible for your reactions. If you are staff and you find yourself in a similar position, remember a little honey goes much further than vinegar. Try your best to sweeten the deal and see how far you get. The point is, if each tries to see things as one human being dealing with another, there won't be so many complaints about bad bosses. ~Visk (c) July 2019 See more
