I was honored to join members of the Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association (NACCA) and members of Council earlier today to raise the Pan-African flag... and mark the beginning of Black History Month. NACCA has organized a great program of events throughout February. I encourage everyone to participate in these events and to learn more about the experiences and history of the black community in Newmarket and Canada. People don't tend to think of mental illness or disrupted mental wellness as the day-to-day experiences of racial microaggressions. They don't think of it as the panic attack that you have every time you enter a school or a workplace and you can't describe it but you know you have a visceral reaction. So because people don't recognize that and they think the world is just set up like that, and they just have to figure it out and like grin and bear it, they don't understand t...hat what they're experiencing, potentially, is a form of racial trauma if you're in a Black body." Kamilah Clayton @adwocc The Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association (NACCA) will act as a conduit to provide quality mental health supports to members of the Black community that is intersectional and culturally relevant. Our mental health program is one critical way that we show up for Black residents in Newmarket and beyond. We are committed to prioritizing opportunity, access, validation and healing. Black Canadians have a long history of service in uniform. Many can trace their family roots to Loyalists who emigrated North in the 1780s after the American Revolutionary War. The No. 2 Construction Battalion is Canada’s first military unit made up primarily of Black personnel. (Nova Scotia Archives). Black soldiers also played a crucial role in the Upper Canadian Rebellion (18371839). Approximately 1,000 Black militia men fighting in 5 companies helped put down the upris...ing, taking part in some of the most important incidents such as the Battle of Toronto. (https://www.veterans.gc.ca) Black Canadians have had to overcome great challenges just to enlist in the military but they persevered to make their mark. From the days before Canada was even a country of its own to the current efforts, the sacrifices and achievements of Black Canadians are a remarkable part of Canadian history. by @thecre8torhouse_

It’s a new day a watershed moment in the history of the Americas. A Black South Asian woman who is the offspring of immigrant parents has ascended to the highest office. #kamalaharris As we redefine what is possible and begin to reimagine the future, let us continue to reaffirm purpose (Nia) and faith (Imani) in our children. Did you know that Black households are 3.5 times more likely to be food insecure than White households? In Canada, 36.6 per cent of Black children are food insecure compared to 12.4 per cent of White children. Homeownership does not make a difference as White renters and Black homeowners have the same risk of household food insecurity. (See facts sheet) Our friends at the York Region Food Network reached out about an opportunity for youth in our community. According to YRF...N, youth leadership can change the way we grow, produce and consume food. We want a community where health and social justice are prioritized and all residents have economic and physical access to healthy, local, culturally acceptable and environmentally sustainable food. We believe youth are vital in making this happen. That's why we are forming a Youth Food Committee where youth can come together to discuss and act on food issues in York Region. Benefits of joining the Youth Food Committee: Youth will have the opportunity to: * Learn about food issues in York Region and develop leadership skills * Connect with other engaged youth and leaders in York Region * Pitch, contribute and/or lead food policy, advocacy and/or education initiatives.
