Nepean Sailing Club - Galley Update Dear Members, It comes with deep regret to inform you that after a review of existing conditions effecting the Club’s Hospitality Services, the decision has been made by the NSC’s Board of Directors to suspend these services (effective November 19th 2020) for the remainder of the autumn and winter months. We understand that traditionally the NSC has maintained a reduced schedule to accommodate members with a hospitable destination to freque...nt during the Club’s off season but with the reduced demand for services, loss of popular weekly draws such as Trivia and Music Nights, and the current Code Orange and forecasted restrictions within the Ottawa region, the Board felt the resulting conditions became unfavorable for the continuation of the hospitality services. We will continue to assess the operations with attention given to both members and staff health and safety, as our goal is to comeback strong for the upcoming 2021 sailing season in order to accommodate a vibrant hospitality service atmosphere.
Dear fellow NSC member, I hope this note finds you well and that you have been enjoying your boating season as much as possible in this most unusual year. Your Board of Directors has worked very hard this season to open your club in phases in accordance with multiple levels of government guidelines and directives to bring you as many boating programs as possible in a safe manner. We are pleased to report that the harbour and trailer launch slips are fully occupied and there h...as been good participation in week night and weekend time trials (Covid version of racing) and an uptick in cruising activity. And we had very successful (although limited enrollment) sessions for our sailing school. By far the trickiest part of this year's operation has been the bar and galley on the deck. This is because we are a club - by definition we come down to NSC to enjoy our boats, see our friends and share stories. Unfortunately the social aspect of our club has been curtailed by the Covid-19 pandemic and in order to comply with government regs and provide a safe environment for all members and staff we must drastically change our behaviour while frequenting the galley. Recently we were visited by Ottawa bylaw officers and although NSC was found to be completely compliant (in fact we were commended for the detail of our plan and Covid code of conduct) the officer did witness some members moving from table to table chatting less than 2m apart - undoubtedly catching up with friends - which is not permitted in a restaurant environment. We did receive a warning that this kind of behaviour can lead to fines (they have issued plenty at other bars) to members (not the club). This is difficult and most unnatural for us as members of a club but I'm afraid it's part or our new reality. Please take this as a gentle reminder that our use of the galley is much different and that we must continue to be vigilant. On behalf of the Board and all of our staff, thank you for your continued support and enjoy the remainder of your boating season! Michael Hoffman, NSC Commodore

Galley & Bar Interior Opening; Thursday September 24th 2020 Dear fellow NSC member, With the weather starting to turn now your Board of Directors has approved the opening of Galley and Bar services inside the club. The NSC Covid-19 Plan and Procedures document has been updated to align with the latest government regulations, guidelines and directives.... As I said in my last message, frequenting the bar and galley represents the biggest challenge for us as members of a club because we naturally want to see our friends and share stories, usually by drifting from table to table. Government regulations are even stricter for inside food services than they are for our deck. The board has approved detailed procedures for our staff to follow which focus on keeping our staff and members safe. Here are the rules of thumb: Upon arrival you will be greeted by host/hostess who will escort you to your table and brief you on the dos and don'ts as they can change as government regs change. Please wait to be seated on your table. Masks must be worn at all times inside the club when not seated at your table. This will be strictly enforced. Unfortunately you will not be able to move from table to table socializing. Group size at tables is limited and should be limited to your social circle. Management and the Board will continue to monitor Covid developments and assess the impact on inside operations including whether to stay open. Thanks very much for your attention. Michael Hoffman, NSC Commodore
