You may be thinking wow what a mess! What is going on here? Where is the path way? This is my experiment with using cover crop in the pathways. By using quick growing buckwheat, peas, vetch and oats it shades out the rest of the weeds. When I am done harvesting from the bed, I just weed whack down the bed and cover crop. In the last picture is after I use my machine to power harrow the bed, ready for some more compost and another round of food. Growing my own fertility! ... I have also been selling the buckwheat sprouts and pea tips. Yum! See more

Help! Looking for some farm help this year. Needing help with garlic harvesting, selling vegetables at market, harvest help, and general farm stuff. I would say about 20 hours per week. This is the first year farming in this land, so there is lots to do! On June 1 there will be a room opening up in my house in Cobblehill shared with 3 others. I could pay for your rent from june to September, plus farm veg. ... This would be perfect for a student who is going back to school in sept. I am open to teaching in a apprenticeship type thing, but if you are already farm experienced, handy, hardworking, have your own vehicle that is valuable to me and can base compensation on what you can offer.

Garlic garlic garlic! Went out to the garlic patch, growing in a new plot of land in North Saanich, to give the garlic another drink of kelp fertilizer. The 1 layer of kelp mulch I put down on the fields in the fall is pretty much gone. The garlic ate it. About 15,000 cloves planted. 15 varieties. ... All of them, except the German Red, are looking good! Some of the early risers got yellow tips from our cold snap in February. New growth looks good. The wire worms are hopefully content eating the grass weeds, so I am not weeding currently. The last few pictures are of 11 varieties in year three of planting from the seed heads. These raised from bulbils will replace my seed stock in the next few years! Excited to see as they mature into full bulbs.

Update at New Mountain Farm! Big changes! The ever so lovely, hardworking, dedicated Noémie Messier Guimont, my farm partner has moved outside of Portland Oregon to start a market farm with her partner Sam! Noémie Souples Errances New mountain lease agreement with Haliburton Community Farm is no longer renewable after 8 years, which now complete. ... We leased land in Central Saanich for 4 years and that is being sold so we lost that land too for this year. So I found a place in North Saanich to plant my garlic for one year. The plight of the landless farmer. I, Mike, have moved homes to Cobblehill with friend Azja (Little Mountain Farm ) with dreams of farming and living here on this beautiful property. There needs to be a lot of infrastructure work done before starting a business, so I am taking the year to do that, and also have some summer adventure times I haven’t had in 10 years. Also hiring out my knowledge, tools, machines, truck, two efficient hands and a strong back. Stay tuned for the creation of a Garlic Dream Team! Derek Powell Thank you for your support over the years! Let’s keep growing!
