Glute Activation - What is it & why is it so important? Due to excessive sitting and inactivity, which lengthens and loosens the muscles along our posterior chain (your backside), many individuals fail to activate their glute muscles. When these muscles become lax, so does our ability to maintain good posture. The hip flexors tighten, pulling our upper body and shoulders forward. In turn, this sets us up for a nasty blend of low back and neck pain, and possibly even sciatica... pain due to pitched nerves around the hips and glutes. Glute activation is different from just performing lower body exercises. Even though youre doing squats and bridges, if youre unaccustomed to turning on or using your glutes correctly, youll unconsciously place stress and tension on surrounding muscles, like those in the legs and low back. The goal with glute activation exercises is to train the glutes to fire throughout all of your lower body exercises, so the muscles become stronger and act as a support system for your core and legs. This level of activation can be achieved through various glute activation exercises. STANDING KICKBACKS: Stand facing a wall or chair for balance. Keeping your leg straight and flexing your right foot, extend it behind you, squeezing your glute to lift your leg. Pause for a beat during your extensive, then lower slowly. Low back progression video from last week. We started with pelvic tilt...now moving to a glute bridge. Glut strength > Bridge . Weak gluteus muscles are one of the main contributors to low back pain, patellofemoral issues (knee pain) and faulty gait patterns ... . This weakness can cause issues down the kinetic chain affecting our ankles and can cause further issues with our feet . Here is a simple exercise by our Physiotherapist Interim Chloe demonstrating a way you can start to strengthen your glut muscles . Start on your back and bend the knees to around 90 degrees, roll your pelvis backwards (posterior pelvic tilt from our previous video), activate your gluts and lift your hips up off the floor . Hold the bridge for around 3-5 seconds and than slowly lower your hips down, repeat 8-12 times and never push into pain .
