Foot FAQ/Fact Friday Q: Why are my toes in pain after walking? A: There are several reasons that your toes become painful. Here are a few of those reasons:... First, make sure that your shoes are appropriate for your feet and the task. The toe box should be wide enough to keep your toes from rubbing in the shoe. Make sure the length of the shoe is appropriate to avoid pressure and bending at the toes. Measure the length of the shoes by ensuring the shoe is one finger width (about 6-12mm) longer than your toes. When measuring, be aware if you have a longer second toe. Also, choosing the right socks is important and often overlooked. Try to avoid socks that are very thick and have a heavy seam in the toes. These features can take up too much room and cause problems. Also, choose materials that allow your feet to breathe. There are many socks on the market made of a variety of materials to reduce moisture, hold their shape and offer extra padding without too much bulk. Toe callusing is a sign of excess pressure and can lead you to a possible cause. Callusing on the side of your big toe can be a sign of an arch collapse. Callusing on the tips of the toes can be a sign that your shoes are too small or that you are gripping your toes. This can happen for different reasons such as instability of your feet. Calluses on the tops of the toes may show that your toes are hammering or bending. This is often the sign of a biomechanical issue in your gait. Another sign of pressure can from an ingrown toenail. Ingrown toe nails can occur from the way they are cut, but also from wearing shoes too small. Wearing proper fitting shoes is important to keep this issue from reoccurring. Your toes may hurt due to other conditions of the foot such as previous injury or surgery, biomechanical issues and genetics. A visit to a Canadian Certified Pedorthist can help figure out the root of the problem and help you to find the solutions that will work best for you. Foot FAQ/Fact Friday (due to technical difficulties on Saturday ) Q: Why does my big toe joint hurt? A: A common cause of pain in the big toe (hallux) is Osteo...arthritis. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage wears down and allows bones to rub against each other. This condition can lead to stiffness in the big toe which can be painful and lead to limitations in motion and in turn limit every day activities. The big toe is unfortunately prone to osteoarthritis. When you walk, the first toe bends, allowing the foot to roll forward to push off and can be supporting up to 50% of our body weight during this phase of gait. As you may imagine this is a lot of wear and tear on the big toe over time. The good news is that there are many treatment options to help keep you moving without as much pain. A Canadian Certified Pedorthist can assess your feet, check the range of motion in the big toe and educate you on what happens in your feet as you walk. Custom foot orthotics with arch support and a firm toe can help, also stiff rocker soled shoes reduce strain and work to alleviate pain and improve mobility. Being properly fit with shoes that do not cramp or squeeze the toes is also very important. Sometimes toe spacers or aligners can be part of the treatment plan. Ask your local Canadian Certified Pedorthist if these solutions are right for you in the treatment of your big toe joint pain. To find a pedorthist near you visit www.pedorthic.ca/
