Winter biking isn't just for hardcore cyclists. Move your body more this winter by choosing active transportation and biking year-round! With a little extra attention to your riding technique and some consideration of your clothing and gear choice, you too can ride your bike year-round. This article (linked below) from the Halifax Cycling Coalition is a great source of information on winter cycling and the staff over at Pictou County Cycle Ltd have a wealth of knowledge to help you stay on your bike this winter. Welcome, everyone, to the Nova Scotia Virtual Ride! What is the Nova Scotia Virtual Ride? Starting on January 16th, Route541.com will begin its next event. Rou...te541.com will launch the Nova Scotia Virtual Ride around the shoreline of Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia Virtual Ride is a bike ride around the province. A virtual ride is one where participants register to ride/cycle a distance (e.g., 5 km) but complete the ride on their own, in their own communities (or while using a trainer). As participants move through the route, they will unlock pictures, news stories and videos from the region they have reached. The goal is to help the participant feel as if they are learning and visiting through different areas of Nova Scotia. As participants ride a distance, they can upload their completed rides to the route541.com website manually or they can sync their Strava account to the site, which will showcase their progress on the map. All participants will have a labelled marker on the map to identity their place along the route. Below you can find the route. The start line is the Black Rock Light house In total the route is 2375km. The participants have until Nov 30th to complete which will work out to a ride of 7km per day. What charity will Route541.com be working with for the Nova Scotia Virtual Series? We are looking at working with two charities for this event. 1.) Shelter Nova Scotia 2.) Wyatt’s Warriors Will there be any swag for participants of the Nova Scotia Virtual Series? We are trying to keep the cost very affordable. At completion of each region, the participant will receive a PDF via email of the with a picture from the region they just completed. It will be high res and they can print off. We are also reviewing the idea to create a custom post card to be mailed from the nearest post office to the Black Rock Light house. More to come on that.

Canada’s first ever 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Adults have been published! They were developed by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP), the Public Health Agency of Canada, Queen’s University, ParticipACTION, and a network of researchers and stakeholders from across Canada. These Guidelines offer clear direction on what a healthy 24 hours looks like for Canadian adults aged 18-64 years and 65 years or older, featuring a unique approach that doesn’t just focus on a single movement behaviour, but instead looks at how all they all integrate together. This is the first time there are recommendations on various types of physical activity woven together with guidance on sedentary and sleep behaviours for these age groups. Check the guidelines out here: https://csepguidelines.ca/
