My cousin, Donna Bright unearthed this information about our mutual ancestor. Lance Sergeant John Bright received the Silver Cross for his service. He enlisted in the 44th Lincoln and Welland Regiment in 1914 serving with the Welland Canal Field Force guarding the frontier border and the Welland Canal. He must have been special as Blacks were often not allowed enlistment. In 1915, he arrived in France where he was wounded in 1916 during the Battle of Mount Sorrel. In 1917 he was awarded the Military Medal for his actions at Passchendale. Only the second to receive this medal and only one of six to be so honoured. He served on the frontline until his death in August 1918. He is buried in Calais, France. So proud.
