Do your affirmations feel hollow and even silly? That’s because you made the #1 mistake in choosing an affirmation You chose something you don’t actually believe. We dive in deeper into selecting the right affirmations for making habits stick in Module 3 of REPLENISH (which actually opens for enrollment next week!), but for today I want to share a couple of examples so you can start creating better affirmations to create habits that stick. EXAMPLE #1... If you have financial debt, saying I attract financial abundance might be too much of a stretch. Change it to something more believable to you. Maybe say something like I can overcome my credit card debt or I am resourceful. EXAMPLE #2 If you are feeling unwell in your body, then maybe saying I am beautiful is not something you are ready for. Instead, try something like I can feel worthy of feeling beautiful or I am willing to change. It’s subtle, but it makes you feel better. You might need to play around with a few different versions and different words to get it just right. You’ll know you nailed it because you’ll feel it in your whole body. It will feel good and it will feel right. Affirmations are an important tool you can use to create new neural pathways in your brain that will in turn help you create new habits. You may have heard of the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15, but you might not know that the lists are updated each year! The top 15 foods with the least pesticides are called the Clean 15, while the 12 foods with the most pesticides are called the Dirty Dozen. Basically, you should opt for organic when buying any foods from the Dirty 12 list, but if you're getting any foods from the Clean 15 it's ok to buy conventional. If you ever find yourself saying "I just couldn't help myself" after eating too much junk food, well you might just be right! Food companies spend millions of dollars on research, development and marketing to make junk food highly addictive. There are a few tactics you can incorporate into your daily life to overcome food addiction. Here are just a few of my favourites, that I find most effective:... Keep the healthy stuff handy. Store healthy foods you want to eat more of front and center. Snack foods are easy to dig into - you just rip open a bag. But if you had red peppers or celery all sliced up and ready to go, you might opt for veggies and hummus dip instead. Know your trigger foods. If you know you've got a sweet tooth for chocolate or candy, keep those out of the house. Or maybe you love salty snacks, in which case try to stay away from pretzels and chips. If you find that you eat too many processed carbs, keep pastries and frozen pizza out of your kitchen... You get the point. Break your routine. If you associate your midday work break with a trip to the vending machine (or your junk food drawer if you're working from home), start a tradition to go for a short walk around the neighbourhood instead. You might actually discover that this habit kicks your craving altogether. A 2015 study of 48 people in PLoSOne found that taking a 15-minute walk temporarily reduced cravings for high-calorie, sugary snacks.
