NISP Canada is pleased to share the good news that a number of its network members have recently been awarded BC Agritech Grants. The Agritech Grant program has invested $7.5 million to help B.C. #agritech, #agriculture and #technology companies scale up, expand and develop technologies to help increase sustainable and #regenerative #foodproduction in B.C. Grants of up to $500,000 were available to B.C. based companies. Over 100 applications were received for the Agritech G...rant program; there were 21 successful applicants. One NISP Canada network member to be so awarded is Vancouver, BC-based Lucent BioSciences Inc. (Lucent). Lucent develops sustainable, carbon-positive, non-polluting micronutrient fertilizers that improve soil health. This particular grant will enable Lucent to continue working with one of its technology development partners, Valid Manufacturing Ltd. (Valid) of Salmon Arm, BC. Valid Manufacturing Ltd was also awarded an Agritech grant in recognition of the many economic and environmental benefits resulting from the proposed joint project. The two companies will jointly address issues related to dairy farm manure management. Valid has recently developed a nutrient recovery system to help dairy farms manage their agriculture waste. Valid’s technology will create recovered dry-cake dairy livestock waste that Lucent will in turn transform into a non-polluting, safe, high-performance fertilizer, and bring it to market. The NISP Canada team is pleased to see that this joint project incorporates the characteristics of industrial symbiosis, a process by which waste or by-product materials are repurposed or upcycled and so kept in use as valuable economic inputs into the local and provincial economies.
