This time last year I was eating and shopping my way across Mexico. Laughing with old friends and making many news ones. Learning how wool and cotton are dyed with vegetables and weaved on wooden pedal looms. Or how the design process starts with creating beautiful home accessories from lava rock and marble. Travelling to these places and meeting these people makes me believe my visions and original intentions of NOMAD can be a reality. Seeing female founded brands that sta...rted in an apartment with credit cards and an idea to now being featured in Architectural Digest and supporting entire communities with work inspires me. However, the most rewarding is no matter if they live in humble rural villages or they are designing for five star hotels and shipping globally everyone I meet in Mexico welcomes me with the same open arms, smiles and of course a little tequila! This is the best part of my job. Wandering back ally’s, markets and villages to find hidden treasures and meeting makers and creators and visiting their studios and workshops. I am not going to deny that opening a store the requires me to travel and not not being able to travel has posed a mountain of challenges- but with a head held high and hopes for Spring I am planning behind the scenes with a few of the people you see here and many new ones! NEW NOMAD SOAP BARS Today we launch our new line of soap bars! This has been in the making for months and I am excited to finally share these with you.... I am a loyal lover of Ocean Bottom Soaps. So when I approached Charmaine with the idea that I wanted to create four exclusive scents which reminded me of my travels she jumped right on board to help. Together we created North, South, East and West. Over the coming days we will feature each soap, their top notes and how they reminded me of a few places and faces around the world. But before that I need to say thank you to a few incredible women. First to my resident brand standard babe Kate @katestuart3 for her creative genius coming up the clever idea of North, South East and West for the soap names. Next to Charmaine over at @oceanbottom you inspire me as a local female leader and small business owner. I loved working with you and your team and cannot wait to see what we come up with next. This year NOMAD has decided to partner with the Hiatus House. We have placed a drop box for donations in our store. We will also be announcing some very special personal gifts and donations that NOMAD and a few other local businesses will be giving to the women in the shelter. Stay tuned for what we have planned. ... The Hiatus House is a Windsor based shelter for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence. Not only do they provide a shelter for women escaping a violent home they also provide the much need counselling and support services and advocate for women and children who have been physically abused. Albeit difficult times this year I am a believer I can always find room in my heart to give back to those who might be facing struggles where by life circumstances have dealt them an unfair hand. I unfortunately do not check Facebook on a daily basis or make a habit of doing business via social media. As you can imagine during these difficult times - I continue to be a one women show at the shop. There is no staff except me and right now I am just trying to pay the rent and keep the lights on. Many BUT not all of our products are available on our website. It does take me time to load inventory online as I am not a web developer either- but COVID has required me to pivot my business much quicker then anticipated. I do the best I can. Speaking from my heart. You may not agree, you may criticize it, you may say its not enough, you may not believe what I am saying but I can only stay true to who I am. Will I make mistakes? yes. Will I say the wrong thing for some and the right for others? yes. Am I listening? - I am trying. I put my foot in my mouth a few days back using the wrong hash tag. I was embarrassed at first and removed my post without saying anything. I made a mistake which is inexcusab...le. I am accountable for my ignorance and learned from my mistake. Today I woke up to a million black screens on IG and FB and posts about being silent and muted. This did not sit well with me so I posted and deleted and posted and delated a black screen shot about four times today. I am/was torn weather I fundamentally agree and understand why so many people are choosing to mute their voices today. I have so many questions running through my head. Why are we supposed to be muted? How does posting a black screen help this cause? Why are white people muting their voices when so many are protesting using their voices? So instead of blindly following the masses in an effort to keep my Instagram grid pretty - I started asking questions to my black friends and to brands in my feed founded by black entrepreneurs and artisans. What I learned and what I was told was not to stay silent if I can post something relevant. I was told to have those difficult conversations about race. Open up dialogues. Dont be scared of the word black. Do something to promote black lead business, causes, non-profits and artists. We should not mute our voices if we have something relevant to post. So all that being said - I will not be muted from June 1 - 7. I will use my voice to post about black founded brands, black business men and women I admire and black artisans. And most important going forward I will bring more products into the store made by black artisans. Many of these businesses will be new to me and many of them I do not know. But this is the time to learn. To share. To give space and a voice to our black lead businesses and share stories and struggles. #no hashtag needed
