It's Thirsty Thursday, folks! And since we are surrounded by an abundance of beautiful orchards like Meleg's Lakeview Orchard & Cider Mill and The Fruit Wagon - Colchester., we're sharing a Apple Cider Sangria recipe that is perfect for fall. Ingredients: 2 apples, cored and chopped 1 lime, sliced (optional)... 2 cinnamon sticks 1 750-ml bottle North 42 Degrees Riesling 2 1/2 cups apple cider 1/2 cup brandy 2 tablespoons sugar 1 cup club soda or ginger ale Place fruit, cinnamon sticks, wine, brandy and sugar in a large pitcher. A fantastic in person book club meeting this past #SundayFunday! The book we read was Hidden Figures. Its the based on the the true story of four African-American women whose unsung work as computers (mathematicians and engineers) launched the US into space and helped the war effort. Set between 1940 and 1970 during a time of segregation, the book makes it clear that these were extraordinarily talented people and demonstrated the impact of racism on their lives and ca...reers. Our second read was The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks another non fiction book. Set in 1951, an African-American woman named Henrietta Lacks underwent an examination in the "colored-only" exam room at Baltimores Johns Hopkins Hospital for cervical cancer. During later treatment, without her consent, her surgeon excised a dime-sized slice of cancerous tissue that would give birth to perhaps the most famous cells in medical history. This book again shows the inequality and lack of recognition and respect for the contributions that were made by an African American. We thought something light and easy to read was what we all needed as a fun summer read and so the members selected a John Sandford novel of their choosing. It was a great way to get back in the swing of things and a nice break away from those heavier historical fictions, Canadian authors and other books we have been read...ing as of late. The perfect pairing to these novels? Why, Summer Chill of course- our only blended white wine that is perfect for a relaxing summer read. Easy descriptive writing, fast paced action and protagonists that may need to chill a bit with their skirt-chasing.
