Throughout the month of May, Burnaby is competing against other municipalities to see who can raise the most money to support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. This is a fundraising initiative to help the #GVFB feed our residents, families and kids in need. My primary role is a Hub Coordinator for multiple child care program sites. I manage and oversee the sites in terms of admin, programming, and staffing. What do you love about your role at BNH? I specifically appreciate the multiple things we do. Not just one sort of need. We help the community with lots of different things. For my position, I really appreciate our mission and outlook and quality of childcare in regards to our local community. Any memorable moments at BNH? I have many. But honestly, my favorite was when we used to do the Santa Claus parade at Edmonds. Oh, man if you see some old photos of thatit was a time where it felt fun and free. The community participating in it, the spirit of getting togetherit was super fun and everyone just hung out and celebrated the spirit of the season.

I am currently the Administrative Assistant for the both the volunteer and senior’s shopping program. Through that, I’ve had a neat assortment of different responsibilities, including some social media and graphic design. But my first role was Team Lead for After School Programs for 4 years, which will always have a special place in my heart. What do you love about your role at BNH? One of the best parts of my job is getting to know our awesome volunteers and other friendly faces. Everyone has an amazing story and unique talents and perspectives to share, but they’re all connected by the same desire to help better the community. Any memorable moments at BNH? One that will always resonate with me happened on a weekend during our free low-income tax clinics. A recently-widowed senior came in to inquire about the program and I was able to connect with her in Cantonese, which she was really happy and grateful for. I was privileged to not only learn about her story, but provide a much-needed listening ear and introduce her to other resources including our Seniors Together program where she could meet more of her neighbours and find a sense of connection. There was also never a dull moment in our After School Programs. During one of the many times that we made slime, I turned around from helping a kid out and saw pink goop dripping from the ceiling. (To be fair, it was quite a low ceiling.) We made sure not to laugh too long so that the goop didn’t make it to the carpet first. I love seeing kids have fun while being themselves and building comradery. You can always do that through karaoke, dancing and also fanning smoke out the window together while making Japadogs. Laughing and learning together is the best thing.

The teams that brought you Living Room Art The Heights and Art Crawl Burnaby Heights continue their mission of ‘strengthening our community through the arts’ with a brand new event hosted by Burnaby Neighbourhood House - North House..., STRIDE 2021 - Burnaby Arts Festival. The Stride creative team is developing safe, innovative and low-barrier programming for all ages both online and outdoors. From January 16-30, 2021 participants of all ages may attend a virtual live music concert or artist studio tour, explore a public art installation in the forest, be inspired on a self-guided photo walk with their family and maybe even buy a favourite piece of art on display in one of our local shops. Help us celebrate Burnaby’s art and soul. Made by neighbours for neighbours, STRIDE will be part arts festival, part community catalyst, and all fun! We’ll see you in January 2021.
