Today, we were pleased to receive the Court’s approval to extend our CCAA stay. The extension will allow us to maintain our facilities and advance our engagement with stakeholders with the goal of transforming our operations. Our team has a lot of work to do to build trust with stakeholders, including local residents and Pictou Landing First Nation. We will work hard to listen better, keep you informed, and build your trust. We want to be clearNorthern Pulp will never use B...oat Harbour again. This fall, we worked with Pictou Landing First Nation and removed a large section of the pipeline into Boat Harbour to reinforce this commitment. Over the past few months, an independent Environmental Liaison Committee has been looking at all aspects of our operations and identifying the issues they would like to see addressed if we are to operate again - everything from forestry practices through to odour and water quality. This is one of our first steps in taking a new approach to engagement. After receiving the Committee’s initial environmental inputs in February 2021, we will begin broader engagement with stakeholders. We look forward to working more collaboratively as we work to transform and modernize our operations.

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree If you buy a Christmas tree in Nova Scotia it may have started as a seedling at our nursery. Last year, we distributed more than 80,000 balsam fir seedlings to Nova Scotia Christmas tree farmers. Are you getting a Nova Scotia Christmas tree this year? If so, post a picture of your decorated tree. Christmas Tree Council of Nova Scotia #trees #paperindustry

With cold weather arriving, members of our team have been doing winter preparations. Thanks to 15 Unifor Canada employees who returned to work for two weeks to ensure the mill is ready for winter’s arrival. We look forward to having all of our employees return to work at a modernized mill as soon as possible.

Happy National Forest Week! When serious forest fires on the west coast of North America are devastating communities, it can be hard to remember that forests are a renewable resource. Here's a reminder from Paper Excellence's silviculture nursery. This photo shows our white spruce seedlings ready to grow into healthy young forests with a diverse species mix. #nationalforestweek

Our dedicated workforce remains our priority through the hibernation of the mill. Paper Excellence has proposed a loan to Northern Pulp to ensure that severance, salary continuation, and retiree benefits can continue. We hope to have this application in front of the court in the coming week.

The recent racism and threats made to Chief Andrea Paul are very disappointing to our team. Racism and discrimination have no place in our society. We encourage all parties to be respectful and accepting of differences. It is our hope that moving forward, Paper Excellence, Northern Pulp and Pictou Landing First Nation can be a positive example of industry and First Nations working collaboratively and respectfully.

As part of the CCAA application, EY Inc. has been appointed as Monitor to oversee the CCAA proceedings and report to the Court. Northern Pulp continues to be managed on a day to day basis by existing management who intend to work with EY Inc. to continue to satisfy obligations to employees, service providers, suppliers, contractors, and retirees. More information on the CCAA filing is available at www.ey.com/ca/northernpulp

Northern Pulp and affiliated companies have filed for voluntary CCAA creditor protection. This is necessary to preserve the value of our assets, complete the hibernation of the Mill in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, and provide needed time to engage with stakeholders and explore alternatives for restarting the mill. We know that you may have questions, so we have set-up a webpage with information on the CCAA filing. FAQs will be added in the next few days. We will continue to provide updates throughout the proceedings. To be clear, we remain committed to restarting the Mill.

We have decided to pause the Environment Assessment for the new Effluent Treatment Facility (ETF) to facilitate further detailed discussions with stakeholders about how we and the community can best work together to foster a clean environment, maintain and protect jobs, and contribute to a strong Nova Scotian economy. We want to operate in Nova Scotia and believe that a modern mill and healthy environment can co-exist in Pictou County.

The new Ministerial Order imposes terms and conditions that are impractical and show a lack of understanding of the pulp and paper industry and effluent treatment facilities. Instead of protecting the receiving environment, the Ministerial Order will likely cause septicity in Boat Harbour with odour emissions. Read our full response below.
