In accordance with the stay-at-home order issued by the Ontario government, Northumberland Humane Society will be adjusting our operations and interactions with the public. The shelter, located at 371 Ward St. in Port Hope, will be closed to the public and our volunteer program will be temporarily suspended. Our essential staff will continue to care for the shelter animals, while maintaining COVID-19 protocols and sanitization efforts. If you are in need of surrendering a pe...t or interested in adopting a pet, please email [email protected] or phone 905-885-4131. Intakes of animals in need will be discussed over the phone in advance and scheduled appointments will be made for drop off. To view all of our pets for adoption, please see our Available Animals Album on Facebook or visit www.northumberlandhs.com/pet-adoptions/ NHS remains committed to protecting and serving the animals that call Northumberland County home. Please have patience with us as we do our best to serve everyone in a timely manner.

The Northumberland Humane Society cares for species other than just cats and dogs, currently we have 4 rats available for adoption! Gouda, Gorgonzola, Manchego & Mozzarella are four month old males who don't mind if their names are a tad cheesy! Rats are very social creatures who thrive when living with at least one other of their kind. Also incredibly smart, rats require enrichment outside of a cage each day which will allow you to bond with them too! Gouda, Gorgonzola, Manchego & Mozzarella enjoy being held and sleeping away the afternoon in their hammock. To learn more about adoption, please contact [email protected] or phone 905-885-4131!
It's not too late to pick up that last minute gift for a great price! Visit the NHS Thrift Store December 21 - 23 from 10 am - 2pm. Louie highly recommends treating yourself this time of year too!

'Tis the season to share our holiday hours of operation! Appointments on December 24th and 31st will be wrapped up early. As a reminder, visiting the shelter requires an appointment arranged in advance. Wishing our community a very Happy Holiday season!
Wonder 7 year old spayed Domestic Shorthair Wonder hasn't had an easy life and our team is committed to providing her what she needs and lots of patience while she adjusts. Upon her first exam it was noted she had a recent litter of kittens and is missing several teeth, hence her cute little smile. Wonder is positive for FIV, feline immunodeficiency virus. Ensuring Wonder stays indoors and is regularly vaccinated at her vet will allow her to live a great life with her new family.
Did you know NHS has a whole room dedicated to our small furry and feathered friends? Currently, we have 3 Budgies and 3 Bunnies looking for their forever families. These guys and gals are all super social and enjoy interacting with our staff. If interested in meeting please give us a call at 905-885-4131 and we would be happy to schedule you an appointment.
Spunky 12 years, 7 months old neutered Domestic Shorthair Spunky is the longest resident of NHS. He has a hilarious and gentle personality, getting the zoomies one moment and then purring for affection. Spunky is currently in a foster home to monitor his litter box activity and to find the best solution to ensure he uses it 100% of the time. Spunky gets a long with everything and everyone!
THANK YOU to Northumberland County for all of your donations to our bottle drive! Because of you, we have raised $25,547.15 for the animals in our shelter! That's equivalent to 170 cat spay/neuter procedures!! Times during Covid-19 restrictions have been tough but because of our amazing community, we can continue to be here for all of the animals that need us!... THANK YOU!!! We will open up the bottle drive again in the warmer weather of 2021, stay tuned!
The thoughtful team at HTM Insurance Company made our December even brighter when they dropped by with a phenomenal donation this week! Throughout 2020, HTM Insurance Company fundraised towards our cause and we are remarkably grateful for the generosity of their staff! This substantial donation will ensure NHS can continue to provide animals in our shelter with the loving care they very much deserve. From every employee, volunteer and furry friend at Northumberland Humane Society, Thank You HTM Insurance Company for your support!
We have some very exciting news to share! Congratulations to our amazing adopters and thank you for welcoming shelter animals into your family!... Are you looking to adopt? ~adoption pending~ Rudolph 10 month old black & white Domestic Longhair female (to be spayed). This tiny lady is quite nervous of the shelter but very much loves people. She enjoys being pet and snuggling into you! Rudolph will require a patient family with not too much activity. A sanctuary room where she can get to know you will be ideal to prevent her from hiding away somewhere unsafe in the home at first. Rudolph came into our care quite matted and her beautiful soft fur will require routine care to prevent future knotting.

~adoption pending~ Smoky & Em 14 year old brothers, neutered, grey Domestic Shorthair. Super friendly and sweet boys! Perfect litter box manners and will make an amazing addition to your home. Smoky & Em greet you wish a soft meow and purr while you pet them, which they wish could go on forever! We ask that these boys be adopted together and have noted that they don't enjoy the company of other cats.

Hello friends! We hope everyone is staying safe and well! As many of you may have already guessed, the Northumberland Humane Society has been very affected by the current situation in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, like many, we have not been able to fundraise as we normally would have in previous years. With that being said, we've decided to create an online auction!... Please find the group link below and review the rules if you'd like to join, it is a public and all are welcome to participate! Our first auction will be on Tuesday, October 13th at 10AM. We will have a large variety of items we would like to send to auction, some household items, decor, and of course many pet supplies! If you are interested in donating an item to the auction, you can email us a photo at [email protected] As always thank you all for the love and support! https://www.facebook.com/groups/1660589810760690/?ref=share
