Did you know that bears don't actually hibernate? Contrary to what you'll probably read via many sources, bears are not true hibernators (nor are any large mammals because their size makes it too difficult to alter into a true state of hibernation). While very similar processes, bears actually go into a state of torpor, which is more of a deep sleep from which they can and do often awaken from during the winter. Animals in torpor can easily awaken if they are threatened, hurt..., or need to give birth. During both hibernation and torpor, animals significantly reduce their heart rate, breathing and body temperature. While in torpor, bears can sleep over 100 days without eating, drinking or passing waste (cool fact is their pee gets turned into protein!). Interesting eh?! @darrencolellowildlife
