One of the biggest questions during pregnancy and postpartum is how to choose the best prenatal vitamin?? The answer is different for everyone, and depends on your diet and lifestyle, but here are a few things to look out for when choosing the right one for you. is it derived from high quality whole foods? Bonus if organic ... does it have key nutrients like folate, choline, iodine, B12, iron, etc. does it contain the active form of the nutrient? (For example B9/folate, not folic acid) does is have artificial colours or flavours, sugars or sweeteners, preservatives, fillers or hydrogenated oils? is it a tablet or capsule? Most prenatal vitamins are tablets or powder capsules, which don’t support fat soluble vitamins such as D3 as well - if this is the case you may need an additional supplement for this nutrient. Very few prenatal multi vitamins contain all the essential nutrients for pregnancy and postpartum in the correct amounts, and depending on your diet, you may need additional supplements to ensure you are obtaining what your body and baby need. Do you wonder when the best time is to prepare your body for pregnancy? Now! If you are thinking about conceiving soon, in the next few months or even the next few years, now a great time to start focusing on your nutrition. ... Why? it gives you more time to discover and correct any nutritional deficiencies you may have before becoming pregnant it prepares your body to be able provide crucial nutrients to baby, such as folate and choline, that are especially important within the first few weeks, before many women even know they are pregnant first trimester (or longer) nausea can sometimes affect what you are actually able to consume. If you have the opportunity to prepare ahead of time, your body is able to use all the nutrients you have stored to keep baby growing and healthy. Taking some time to learn what nutrients are important to supporting your healthy pregnancy and baby before you start, means one less thing to worry about through the excitement (and possible nausea!) of those early pregnancy days - #pregnancy #nutrition #nourish #newmama #foodismedicine #prenatalnutrition #pregnancynutrition #preconception

I’ve been thinking a lot about getting through this winter, as we come to the shortest days of the year with many grey days ahead, while in the midst of recommendations to stay home on top of it all, it’s going to be a long one. But there are some thing we can focus on to make it through, here’s what I’m making a priority this winter: getting outside for a breath of fresh air soaking up as much natural light as I can get moving my body... getting enough sleep nourishing my body with warming whole foods practicing gratitude supplementing with vitamin D - this was a game changer for me a couple years ago! What do you do to get through the season? PS. Most of us in Canada do not get enough vitamin D from the sun, there just isn’t enough sunlight! If you’re supplementing, look for a supplement in an oil carrier such as a drop or capsule for best absorption. #winterblues #seasonalaffectivedisorder #winteriscoming #vitamind #winter2020
