What do all of the following labour and birth medical interventions have in common? They can all negatively impact the initiation, effectiveness, and duration of a breastfeeding dyad. Some of these can even impact your child’s motor development. I could go and explain each one of these one at a time, but I won’t because I’ll run out of room on here.... The biggest thing I want to get across with this post, is informative awareness to all expecting parents, parents with a new baby at home, parents having difficulty feeding your baby, or thinking about becoming a parent. If any of these medical interventions resonate with you in any way or were a part of your birthing journey, seeking support from a good holistic care team is very important and can make all the difference with your little one! That would mean: Lactation Consultant/feeding expert support and assessment. Paediatric Body worker such as chiropractor, Osteopathy or RMT. Ongoing home therapy such as stretching, massage, suck training and tummy time. These interventions are the most common reasons for baby latch difficulties in the early postpartum period. Having a community of support is absolutely essential to have positive outcomes and to meet your feeding goals! #supported and #informed is best! If you ever want to learn more I’d be happy to help! Every journey is unique Do you any personal experiences to share? Did any of these interventions cause implications on your feeding journey? Have you noticed your baby’s milk drinking behaviours change since starting table food? Are they nursing less or drinking less expressed breast milk during the day and eager and excited to get what’s served at the table? This can happen in a baby that’s newly receiving solids as they’re experiencing new tastes/textures & it’s fun!... B U T remember, their only source of nutrition should be breastmilk for the first 6 months, and after 6 months table foods should be complimentary. Complimentary foods are an added energy source that baby needs, but they do not replace milk! (WHO 2019). Baby drinking less can have a negative impact on your milk supply. So ensure your breasts are getting drained each feed. If not, remove it by hand expression or pumping. Drinking less = offer less table food. Offering milk 1 hour before meals can help fill their bellies up with all their needed nutrition for optimal growth, but still leave room for exploration of table foods! If baby is refusing milk or breast hold off on table food and offer milk in a cup. Going to a quiet room with no distractions 1 hour or closer to solid meal time to ensure they fill up their belly’s. Offer both breasts and do some breast massage prior to nursing to get the milk really flowing for them. After offering breast first, give them some expressed breast milk in an open or straw cup with their table foods. Our precious baby’s need to be getting the proper amount of calories from breastmilk in order to grow optimally. If they are missing out on these often times they will try to make up for it through their complimentary foods, or waking up more frequently at night to nurse/drink. Within these breastmilk calories there is an abundance of different ingredients they need to thrive and stay protected, some you can’t get elsewhere! WHO recommends to breastfeed exclusively for at least 6 months, and continuing to breastfeed until 2 years and beyond! Although this is a recommendation, every breastfeeding journey is unique and can last less or more than 2 years! How does/did your baby do with solids? https://www.who.int//fact-sheets/detail/infant-and-young-c

T O U C H & S M E L L ....A healthy newborn is born with all 5 senses developed by the time it’s term. The first hour-two after a baby is born is a critical time for a mother and baby to meet, bond, and for baby to orient itself to its mother by the use of the two most profound senses it has. ... Touch & Smell This golden hour should be a time where the mother and baby are kept together bare skin against bare skin and left uninterrupted. A baby’s strong sense of touch can feel it’s mothers chest and her breath on its body. A new baby’s olfactory senses are much more activated than sight or sound, therefore drawing it to the mothers chest and areola. A mothers areola secretes a smell that mimics amniotic fluid, this invites the baby to activate its innate latching abilities. This absolutely critical time has been proven by evidence to initiate a better latch, and better breastfeeding outcomes. It’s exciting to have a new baby but respecting the first hours a mother has with her new baby is so important. As soon as the baby is swaddled tight and handed over to grandparents and visitors these new fragrances and touches disorientate the baby from it’s mother. There time will come later, they must respect and be patient of the mother-baby-father bond. (If a newborn baby is separated from its mother immediately after birth, giving the baby a small handkerchief or blanket with mom’s breastmilk on it or rubbed against her chest can help re-create this moment. Of course, doing skin to skin as soon as it’s safe for baby to do so is strongly encouraged and has been shown to stabilize a baby’s vital signs). #breastfeeding #initiatingalatch #breast #kangaroocare #goldenhour #latch #momandbaby #breastisbest #supportedisbest #fedisbest #informedisbest #breastfeedingmama #the5senses #newborn #baby #informed #crunchymama #boymom #lactation #lactationsupport #lactationconsultant #ibclc

Tummy Time Muscle Tension Did you know that when a baby cries, screams or dislikes tummy time this is an indication there could be muscle tension or discomfort? As much as they may not enjoy it, it’s even more important those muscles are stretched.... All the tension from labour and birth is most likely the culprit for this! C-section birth, forceps or vacuum assisted birth, and breech are just some of the reasons a baby can have muscle tension after birth. Baby being referred to a body worker or chiropractor should be the standard of care if any of the above mentioned interventions were used, or if oral restrictions have been discovered on your little one. Muscle tension in babies can not only cause developmental milestone delays or flat spots on the head but can also negatively impact breastfeeding! So many muscles are involved in nursing and positioning, if they are tight or immobilized it can have a HUGE impact. Tummy time is incredibly important, small amounts of time numerous times a day (every diaper change for 1-2 minutes). I take my son to a chiropractor after discovering he had a lip tie. They work miracles! @mumandcubwellness Has your baby had any type of body work done (chiropractor, Osteopathy, cranialsacral therapy)?? Were you recommended this if your baby was born with medical intervention? I’d love to know, post below #breastfeeding #chiropractor #cst #breastfeedingmama #tummytime #muscletension #breastisbest #fedisbest #supportedisbest #informedisbest #breastfeedingmom #crunchymama #boymom #lactation #ibclc #lactationsupport
