Last night, something big happened. Jupiter and Saturn came together in a great conjunction. It's the nearest they've been in 800 years. And, it happened on the winter solstice, a time of rebirth and one of the most spiritual days of the year. What does this all mean for us? Jupiter is associated with optimism, growth, healing and miracles. Saturn with responsibility and long term lessons. Together it is said that they will bring a positive shift to the world. Expect radical,... positive change, growth. This is all happening in the age of Aquarius. Aquarius energy allows us to focus on what's good for the whole rather than solely on our wants and needs. Overall, good things to come. Embrace it. Jen

Magnesium is a nutrient essential to human function. The heart, brain, and kidneys depend on it. It plays a vital role in regulating muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and making protein, bone, and DNA. It is also considered an anti-stress mineral. It is a natural tranquillizer, functioning to relax the muscles and gastrointestinal tract. In terms of its importance in human nutrition, it is one of the most underrated minerals. Blood tests are proving that magnesiu...m deficiency is very common, and considerably so in the chronically ill. Caffeine, alcohol, and sugar aggressively deplete Magnesium. And some common medications such as aspirin, antibiotics, cortisone, cardiac drugs and diuretics also deplete the tissues of Magnesium. Symptoms that can signal a magnesium deficiency include fatigue, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, depression, dizziness, constipation, muscle cramps or weakness. The inability to control the bladder, night sweats or uncontrollable sweating hands and feet, back pain, painful menstrual cramps, restless leg syndrome, memory loss and headaches are also signs. Certain disorders may also be helped with increased magnesium dosesanxiety, fatigue, hyperactivity, hypertension, alcoholism, insomnia, menstrual pain, osteoporosis, and PMS. Foods with the highest magnesium levels include dark leafy greens, fish, seafood, legumes, nuts seeds and cocoa. Recommended doses vary, and Magnesium must be balanced in the body with calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and chloride for optimum magnesium function. There are many types of Magnesium. Some forms are better suited for certain issues than others. If you're concerned, you may not be getting adequate amounts of Magnesium, suffer from any of the above problems listed above, or for proper dosing information, consult your nutritionist or healthcare provider. I am always available to answer your questions. Stay healthy, Jen.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! It is finally time to let go of 2020 and all that came with it. For most, it was a lot of fear and uncertainty, anxiety and stress. We are now going to make space in our hearts and minds to receive the great things that will come. Let's envision 2021 as a clear board and manifest what we want to fill that board with this year. I know I will be making space for health, joy, happiness, abundance, growth, and expansion. Manifest how you would like 2021 to be, a...nd it will be. No more dwelling on the past, just looking forward to a bright future. With love, Jen

Today is the winter solstice. For many of us, this automatically triggers thoughts of cold and darkness. I invite you to take a different look at the first day of winter and the season. For many cultures worldwide, the winter solstice is a celebration. It marks an important milestone. It's the shortest day of the year and the longest night of the year and signals a strong transition point between seasons. Ancient civilizations and various religions have their rituals for taki...ng advantage of the unique energy. Many believe that it is a rebirth of the sun, which holds powerful energy for regeneration, renewal and self-reflection. Pagans believed that on this day, the moon would give birth to the sun! The winter solstice is a time of quiet energy, where you get the opportunity to look within yourself and focus on what you want and need. It's time to set goals and intentions for the coming year, examine and let go of our past, and make changes within ourselves. The solstice is a personal awakening. Take advantage of this time for yourself. And remember, the days slowly get longer from here. Happy winter. Jen

Are you consistently getting 7-10 servings of fruits a vegetables a day? Be honest now. Canada’s Food Guide recommends that adults get 7-10 servings of veggies and fruit a day and children aged 4-8 get 5 servings. It’s proven that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can significantly reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease and some cancers. Diets insufficient in fruit and vegetable consumption increase the risks of diabetes, cancers, and obesity. I get it. It’s not easy. ...It’s time consuming and costly and let’s face it sometimes we don’t feel like eating heaps of fruits or veggies. It can be quite tough to get our children to eat period, let alone eat nutritious foods. I used to spend a lot more time in the kitchen and a lot more money in the supermarket in order to juice and make sure I was consuming enough fruits and veggies each day. Then I found out about Juice Plus+. Juice Plus+ is whole food based nutrition, including juice powder concentrates from 30 different fruits, vegetables and grains, enhancing a healthy diet. Juice Plus+ helps bridge the nutrient gap between what you should eat and what you do eat every day. Not a multivitamin, treatment or cure for any disease, Juice Plus+ is made from quality ingredients carefully monitored from farm to capsule to provide natural nutrients your body needs to be at its best. For as little as $2 a day, you can consume 6 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Direct message me if you would like more information or to order Juice Plus+ and inquire about how your children can get Juice Plus+ for free. It’s never too late to start eating well and improving your health and lifestyle. Stay healthy. Jen.

Iron plays many essential roles in our body, including keeping us energized and healthy and helping to keep a clear mind. When iron levels fall, we may feel tired, weak, and have difficulty concentrating. If adequate amounts of iron in your diet is a concern, consuming sufficient amounts of the following six iron-filled foods will keep you on the right side of the iron scale. Keep in mind; animal proteins contain heme iron. This form of iron is absorbed the easiest. ... Questions about iron levels and whether or not you get enough, feel free to DM me. Let's talk. Many people, especially ignorant people, want to punish you for speaking the truth, for being correct, for being you. Never apologize for being correct, or for... being years ahead of your time. This is your monthly reminder that as the Full Moon is upon us, it's time to let go of what no longer serves you. December's Moon, also known as the Cold Moon, rises today, December 29th, at 10:30 PM EST. Its name comes from the frigid temperatures we start to experience this time of year. It is sometimes referred to as the Long Night Moon as it rises during the year's longest nights. The name may also refer to the fact that this Moon has a high trajectory across the sky, r...esulting in the Moon resting above the horizon for a more extended time. The Cold Moon is the final Moon of the year. It's time to rest and reset, and practice self-care as you reflect on the past 12 months. Be well, Jen #fullmoon #thecoldmoon #coldmoon #letgo

Ashwagandha is an ancient medicinal herb. It is an adaptogenic herb, which means it helps the body manage stress. This herb is most important for vitality, rejuvenating, balancing, strengthening and calming to the nervous system. Its used for relieving fatigue, nervous exhaustion, and memory loss. It's also a mild sedative and helps with mental chatter. I use this herb in conjunction with other adaptogens in medicinal remedies for clients who want to better cope with stress. ...Besides its calming benefits, ashwagandha has many additional medicinal benefits. It is a fantastic herb for helping Alzheimer's patients with memory loss problems. It helps correct memory loss by modifying how the brain uses acetylcholine. It is also helpful to control hypothyroidism and those with autoimmune disorders. Great for arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome when combined with other herbs. It can be taken in a powder form, capsules, tea and tincture forms. I add 1 tsp of Ashwagandha root powder in my coffee daily and in a tincture form before bed for a calm relaxing sleep. Stay well, Jen

Many studies have proven that eating junk food has similar addictive qualities as some commonly abused drugs. Junk food manufacturers spend a lot of money researching how to design the "perfect" food, tasty, pleasurable, and makes you crave more. Fat, salt, and sugar are used in perfect combinations to excite your brain and create a link between the particular food and pleasure. The more of these types of food we eat, the more we crave, creating a vicious cycle that is diff...icult but not impossible to break. To break the cycle, start by eliminating these cravings by reducing the amount of junk food you eat. The less junk food you eat, the less you will crave. If you find you reach for these foods when you are anxious or stressed, acknowledge that and try to replace the need to coax your emotions with food with a healthier activity, a walk, run, or a creative outlet. Clean out your pantry. Eliminate foods laden with bad fats, sugar and salt. When grocery shopping, stick to the perimeter of the store and avoid processed foods. If you still find it difficult to kick these habits, message me; we can talk and find ways to make it easier for you, putting you on the track to a more nutritious lifestyle that will leave you craving foods that make you feel great. Through nutrition counselling, I have helped many people like you live happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives. Strengthening your immune system to ensure you stay as healthy as possible during cold and flu season is a multifaceted approach. I recommend eating a nutritious diet high in fruits and vegetables, taking a customized herbal remedy, and getting adequate rest, exercise and meditation. Some vegetables are superior to others when it comes to strengthening the immune system. Garlic is one of those. It is an antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal agent. Regular consumption of garli...c is proven to improve immune cell function. It stimulates certain cell types known as cell killers making it great for fighting foreign toxins such as cold and flu viruses. The great thing about garlic is that it’s easy to add to your diet. It goes in just about everything from sauces and salad dressings to pizza, pasta, stir fry, or on your favourite veggies and proteins. Get the benefits of garlic from a herbal remedy form via a customized immune-strengthening tincture made especially for you that would include several immune system strengthening herbs. Enjoy and stay healthy! Jen #garliclovers #garlicforhealth #immunesystemhealth #immunesystemsupport #immunesystemstrong #immunesystemboost #naturalmedicine

So much talk about vitamin D these days; vitamin D and the immune system, its effects on the lungs, respiratory system and Covid-19, and that most North America's are vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin, is a fat-soluble vitamin - manufactured in human skin when in contact with the sun's ultraviolet raysor ingested and absorbed through the intestinal walls. Functionally it is more like a hormone, and it is structurally related to estrogen and ...cortisone. Vitamin D plays a vital role in the absorption of calcium in the body and bone homeostasis. Other benefits include preventing certain cancers, maintaining bones and teeth, and treating diabetes, eye and skin problems, asthma, and more. Increasing epidemiologic evidence links vitamin D deficiency and autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, inflammatory bowel disease and systemic lupus. The implications of vitamin D deficiency on the immune system have also become more evident as of late. Immune cells have vitamin D receptors. In the context of vitamin D deficiency, there appears to be an increased susceptibility to infection when vitamin D is lacking. Recent studies also link Covid-19 deaths and vitamin D deficiency. A recent study in Spain discovered that more than 80% of the patients who tested positive for Covid-19 were vitamin D deficient. More testing needs to be done to understand the correlation between vitamin D and Covid-19. As cold and flu season is upon us, and as we live through the pandemic's challenges, immune system health is critical. Winter, cloudy days, less exposure to sunlight, ageing, and darkly pigmented skin all inhibit the sunshine vitamin production. Speak to your medical practitioner about a blood test that can measure your vitamin D levels. In the meantime, get outdoors and incorporate foods into your diet high in vitamin D. Animal products, fish oils, egg yolks, butter, and oily fish such as mackerel, sardines, herring, and salmon are good vitamin D sources. Reach out if you have any questions on vitamins and the direct effect on your health. Stay safe and stay healthy, Jen

To Snack or not to Snack? When we eat, insulin levels in our body increase. When we space out our meals, we give our body time to rest. Eating frequently, or too much snacking, can result in blood sugar irregularities, a roller coaster ride so to speak. Proper snacking however, can be that bridge between staying satiated and not overeating at mealtime. Some of us need to snack, whereas others should avoid snacking altogether. Snacking, therefore, is very individual. ighly a...ctive people tend to have more of a need to snack. Those with diabetes or hypoglycemia may need to snack if their blood sugar falls too low. If you fall into one of these groups, choose snacks that are high in protein and fibre, low in carbohydrates and less than 200 calories. Examples of these include: Nuts and seeds Veggies, guacamole, & cheese Apples + nut butter Protein Shake Boiled eggs Yogourt + berries Salmon, sardines For individuals watching their weight, I would advise steering away from snacking or limiting snacks to once a day. Eating three good size, nutrition-dense meals a day results in lower fasting blood sugars and better insulin sensitivity, which results in greater weight loss. Snacking can add substantial calories to your day, which may hinder weight loss, particularly if leading a sedentary lifestyle. If you constantly find that you’re hungry throughout the day, perhaps you need to implement some measure to help control leptin, otherwise known as the satiety hormone, and ghrelin, the hunger hormone To help increase leptin and feel fuller, consume enough fibre and limit fructose consumption. consume complex carbohydrates; veggies consume a good amount of protein at breakfast Omega 3s Avoid severe caloric restrictions Get adequate amount of sleep Eating three meals a day of mostly whole and nutrient-rich foods, getting adequate sleep, managing stress, and staying active, as well as sufficient protein and good fats such as Omega 3s have been proven to help control ghrelin levels. If you’re concerned about how to best structure your meals to fulfill your weight and health objectives, DM me. I am here to help! Jen

It's a Blue Moon! As the second full moon this month, it receives the moniker of blue moon, and it just so happens to fall on Halloween. Berries offer many benefits to health, so many that I couldn’t cover them in a single post, so I will include some high level benefits. Their benefits are attributed to their phytochemical and vitamin content. Studies have demonstrated that berry extracts exert anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, anthelmintic, and anti-Alzheimer activities. THE HEART - The antioxidants and nutrients in berries have shown to keep the heart healthy by helping lower blood... pressure and cholesterol while reducing oxidative stress. THE BRAIN - Berries help provide protection against Alzheimers as well as age-related memory loss and cognitive decline. The antioxidants also help prevent inflammation in the brain thus protecting neuron damage. THE SKIN - Antioxidants in berries along with the fibre, and other compounds are responsible for fighting skin inflammation related to acne, eczema, psoriasis, and premature aging. Berries also help with improving skin circulation and collagen production. THE GUT & IMMUNE SYSTEM - Although we know a lot about the benefits of berries and the support of the immune system, recent research also points to benefits on the individual parts of the digestive system, showing strong support as adjuvant to established therapies for a variety of gastrointestinal and immune-related illnesses. CANCER PREVENTION - Ellagi acid, a phytochemical that helps prevent cancer is present in both blackberries and raspberries. Pterostilbene which is abundant in blueberries has been proven to help protect against colon cancer. Add berries wherever you can and stay healthy! Calendula officinalis, also known as Pot Marigold is from the Daisy family. It is a flowering plant and it has great external and internal benefits. It is known for its antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antival, and antibacterial properties.... Externally, it is a great topical skin treatment for wounds, external bleeding, stings or scrapes as it’s a great natural antiseptic. It can be processed as an oil or salve (Check back in a few weeks and I will upload a how-to video on making calendula oil and salve). Internally, it offers great benefits for the lymphatic system, specifically alleviating lymphatic congestion. And as if that wasn’t enough, it’s a good immune stimulating herb, excellent for fighting colds, infections, allergies, and fevers.
