This article I wrote with Precision Nutrition on the topic of how junk food is manufactured to get us HOOKED is still one of my very favourites. . It explains the science of what’s going on in our brains and bodies and some tips for what you can do to set yourself up for success when it comes to healthy eating. . At the very least, it makes me feel less crazy to know that certain foods are chemically engineered to be difficult to manage portion control and speed of eating.... (You’re not broken, but maybe parts of our food system are.) . Enjoy! Jen See more

Nature knows best - eat the rainbow! . Doing some batch cooking this morning and making some chicken burrito bowls (recipe linked in comments below), and our weekly veggie bucket. . As I like to say, make the healthy choice the easiest choice to grab.... . Right now during this pandemic, it’s another great way to make sure my immune system stays healthy and robust to do it’s job to protect me. . Eating a 1/2 plate of veggies is much easier when you: a) give yourself more #variety to pick from b) make is super #convenient (veggie bucket anyone?)... Here’s how I do it in my household, and my favourite 5 tips that I share with my own nutrition clients to help them eat more vegetables. http://www.nutritionrx.ca/more-veggies/ Jennifer Broxterman, RD p.s. The first plate with the most variety is legit part of my lunch today! #walkthetalk #healthylifestyle #healthyeating #healthyeatinghabits #veggies #vegetables #eattherainbow #registereddietitian #nutritionist #nutritionrx

Potty training and mindful eating have more in common than you might realize... - Would you want your 10 year old peeing all over the house wherever he wants? - standing in the kitchen... into the potted plant in the corner of the room sitting on the couch - Ew, that would be gross, right? - At a young age, you want your toddler to learn how to hold their bladder and wait to use the BATHROOM when they have to go, which is the one room in the house to do your business. - Yet think about all of the places that we normalize eating food (and often mindlessly). Standing, sitting, in the car, on the couch, in our beds. We're eating (aka "peeing") all over the place, and we need to relearn the skill of eating only at the kitchen table sitting down. - Most of society acts like adults in diapers, peeing (aka eating) wherever they want, whenever they want. That's a fun image. - I explore this a bit further here: http://www.nutritionrx.ca/potty-training/ - If the majority of your meals are AWAY from your kitchen table, I think you'll get a lot of value reading this short article. - xo Jen #pottytraining #healthyeating #healthyhabits #healthylifestyle #mindfuleating #mindfulness #nutritionist #registereddietitian #nutritionrx

Don't be like Janice - the mom I worked with who wanted to run a 1/2 marathon, but because she couldn't follow her training program perfectly to a T because of difficulty arranging childcare, she gave up completely before she even got started. . If she couldn't train 4x/week like the plan required, she didn't want to train at all. Perfection crippled her, and her athletic dream sat on the shelf. .... Read her whole story here: http://www.nutritionrx.ca/bdo/ . Do YOU get hung up on the BTO (best theoretical option), instead of accepting and embracing the BDO (best doable option)? . Consider this: An option that doesn’t exist in reality isn’t actually an option. It’s just an idea, or a Best Theoretical Option (BTO). . What if you looked for and acted upon the Best Doable Option (BDO) instead? . xo Jen . . . #progressnotperfection #healthyhabits #progress #success #embraceimperfection #doyourbest #nutritionrx #nutritioncoach

10 SECRETS AND A THROAT PUNCH... . If a nutrition coach told me to "count my macros" so my Thanksgiving meal can fit into my nutrition plan, I'd want to throat punch them. (Ok, I'm not a violent person, but I'd be seriously annoyed.) .... Likewise, if a personal trainer emailed me with language about "working off my holiday meal", also not cool. Seriously, they both would be fired, as I no longer tolerate a dysfunctional relationship with food and exercise where everything is based on calorie math, counting and weighing food portions, and "earning" my right to enjoy a special meal with family. . If you know anything about me, it's that I have a passion for nutrition & wellness, and I love helping others to improve their health in a non-judgmental way. . I'm also all-in on habits-based nutrition coaching, because you get to meet people where they are at to help them build their own healthy relationship with food, one positive habit at a time. . I NEVER force discussions about nutrition with my family or friends (I'm anti-diet culture and how you eat is your own business, unless you've hired me for help with your own eating habits), but it doesn't mean I can't help build a supportive environment when we host holiday meals at our house. . There are 10 secret things I do to help my family eat better and feel less stuffed at a decadent meal like Thanksgiving or Christmas, without ever telling anyone how to behave around food. We're all adults after all, and we all have a right to eat however we want without being judged. I CAN help tweak the environment to make it a bit healthier though. :) .
