Thank you to @mnpllp for their generous donation this holiday season. Normally their team comes together to celebrate with a Christmas Party, due to Covid-19 that wasn’t possible this year. Today, like many others we take a moment of silence, proudly display our poppy’s in honour of those who gave their life to protect our freedoms. Our Administrative Office is closed in observance of Remembrance Day on Wednesday, November 11th, 2020. We will be back in office at 8:00 am on Thursday, November 12th, 2020. Our 24 hour Emergency Shelter remains operational even during Stat holidays, to provide safety to families fleeing domestic violence. Thank you to our tea...m members who are working today. We encourage anyone facing immediate danger to call 911. If you suspect that someone’s life may be in danger, please call 911. To speak to someone call our 24-7 crisis line at 1-780-532-2672. As much as many of us are isolating for public health directives, & taking a day of solitude in respect for veterans and military families, there are still many reasons to pay attention to the wellbeing of those in your community #genderbasedviolenceawareness ##equalityandempowerment #womensupportwomen #womensshelter #womenandchildrensshelter #veterans #remembranceday #militaryproud #canadianarmedforces #alberta #poppy #rememberanceday #canada

It is with deep sadness that the Breakfast with the Guys Committee is announcing the cancelation of this years breakfast. Collectively we have agreed that due to the Covid-19 pandemic and given the Government of Alberta, Alberta Health Services regulations and direction from Dr. Dena Hinshaw, it would not be possible to safely proceed with this years event. We are hopeful that next year 2021 we will be able to gather again, and continuing to work together in ending violence... against women and gender based violence. We want to sincerely thank our community for your continued support. Remember that November is Prevention of Family Violence month Impact Grande Prairie will be supporting our community for local Covid-19 safe events that will still be taking place across the city in the next month! We will be sharing their details soon, you can also click on them to learn how you can participate! The Community Support Program for One to One support is still actively operating with client’s choice of in person social distanced meetings or online virtually options. If you or someone you know needs supports and/ or a referral to our programming please contact Community Support Manager, Heather Ferguson at 780-538-1332 X 108 or 780-814-1428 or by email [email protected]. As of March 2020, we had to temporarily cancel our weekly support groups. Our Community Suppo...rt team has been worked very hard and eventually was able to remotely offer digital/virtual support groups. We are excited to announce we can return to holding in person support groups. There will be a limit of 10 people for each group to maintain social distancing practices. Those wishing to attend will need to pre-register to reserve space, if you have not pre-registered, we cannot guarantee space but will accept drop-in’s as space allows. Participants will be asked Covid-19 screening questions and have temperature taken upon arrival in order to attend. *Childcare will be available for those attending in person groups (Please keep in mind screening and temperature will be completed for children as well) For those interested in reserving a space for any future dates in October/November please call 780-538-1332X108 to reserve or if you have any questions related to groups or our support group safety practices. Schedule: Abuse Group Wednesday 6pm-8pm Self-Esteem Group Thursday 6pm-8pm Parenting Group is on hold temporarily (as we replace and train new support workers) ***Once we return to in person groups, we will no longer be having group via zoom, if there are people who are still unable or uncomfortable with in person group they can contact our Community Support team and we will see about options to support your need. If there becomes a need for additional group dates to support the number of people accessing and maintain social distancing we will review, and potentially add additional groups of those that are needed to accommodate. Please note that we are currently in the process of hiring new Community Support Workers and onboarding a new Trauma Counsellor. In recognition of theses changes if you are having difficulty reaching a previous team member please contact the Community Support Manager directly and we will ensure you are connected to the correct supports.

On September 30th, Odyssey House is going Orange! We wear orange shirts in remembrance and honour of those who attended residential schools The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations. #orangeshirtday #orangeshirtday2020 #everychildmatters #everychildmatters #equalityandempowerment #empowerment #womensshelter #domesticviolenceawareness

Odyssey House recently received DfG Supreme Kits from @daysforgirls DAYS for GIRLS is an international organization that works to increase access to menstrual care and education for women. Their POD (Portable Object of Dignity) is sold at an affordable price, and is 100% reusable. You might have noticed that these kits dont look like traditional pads, the bright colours camouflage staining. The absorbent liners unfold to look like washcloths, which allows women & girls t...o use, and wash them without embarrassment, and with privacy. We are grateful to the local DfG chapter who made the kits for our women and pre-teens accessing services. #periodsintopathways #everygirleverywhereperiod #daysforgirls #daysforgirlsinternational #daysforgirlscanada #increasedaccess #menstruationmatters #thepinktax #periods #genderbasedviolenceawareness #equalityandempowerment #womensupportwomen #womensshelter #womenandchildrensshelter #communitysupport #domesticviolenceawareness #domesticviolencesurvivor

Grande Prairie, Alberta Monday, June 15, 2020 Odyssey House Emergency Shelter has implemented additional precautionary public health measure for clients and staff in response to the news of having a positive tested case for COVID-19. With the individual in a safe separate isolation, Alberta Health Services (AHS) confirmed that the shelter is safe to remain open and provide services to anyone experiencing domestic violence. AHS staff came to the shelter to test the indiv...idual. Once the test came back positive, we were able to work with our sister shelters and local hotels to modify our services to continue to support those that are experiencing family violence. All individuals accessing the shelter including employees were tested as a precaution, Odyssey House test results were all negative apart from the one case. All employees will continue to follow all health and safety procedures according to Odyssey Houses Pandemic plan. AHS has assessed that it is safe for the shelter to remain open to provide support for anyone who needs our services. Along with ongoing social distancing and cleaning protocols in place, admitting staff will continue practicing with AHS recommended PPE at the time of residents intake, and any individuals experience symptoms are asked directly to self-isolate in a self-contained room while they stay in the shelter, with testing practices available and Alberta Health service instruction. AHS representatives commended Odyssey House on our procedures and indicated the precautions taken prevented what could have been a more serious situation. If you are experiencing domestic violence, you do not have to move into the shelter to get help. You can also access confidential services such as one-on-one support, safety planning, and risk assessment by phone by calling our 24-hour crisis line 780-532-2672. Odyssey House would also like to thank our staff, residents, hotel employees and community partners that assisted during these unique times. Your support and well wishes meant so much to us, without your generosity and kindness we would not have been able to continue supporting women and children experiencing domestic violence in the peace region. You have our upmost gratitude!
