While the exact temperature of when to plug your vehicle in varies depending on the age, make and model, it's important to remember to plug your vehicle in when it becomes extremely cold at night and during the earlier morning hours. Most newer vehicles should start in -30, but it can still strain your engine if your vehicle hasn't been plugged in. A general rule is to plug your engine block heater in when the weather reaches -20 or lower, just to be safe. If you drive a diesel vehicle, you may need to plug in the engine block heater before the temperature drops that low.
