Save for later! All embryology labs are not alike. Studies show that the quality of the lab and the experience of the lab team can significantly affect egg freezing success rates. If you are considering egg freezing it is a good idea to do some research on the embryologist and lab team to ensure they have experience and expertise in egg vitrification (flash freezing) and egg thawing.... 6 QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK A FERTILITY CLINIC IF YOU ARE FREEZING YOUR EGGS 1. What is the experience of the lab team? Olive’s award-winning lab includes a large team of some of the best embryologists and andrologists in the field. The lab team has received multiple excellence awards recognizing the outstanding embryologists who have mastered the highly technical skills of egg vitrification and warming. 2. Does the lab have an onsite lab director? Dr. Salah Abdelgadir, PhD has over 20 years of experience as a lab director and certification as a Technical Supervisor (TS) and High Complexity Lab Director (HCLD) from the American Board of Bioanalysis. He is the only PhD-educated lab director in British Columbia who works on-site, full time to maintain strict and direct supervision of all laboratory processes and procedures. 3. Does the lab have special training in egg freezing (cryopreservation)? Olive’s embryologists have received extensive training in protocols from Donor Bank USA, one of North America’s leading provider of frozen eggs. 4. How many egg freezing cycles has the lab performed? Many clinics may only have experience doing a few egg freezing cycles per year. Olive’s egg freezing program has been growing significantly and the lab has now done over 655 egg cycles. 5. What techniques are used in the lab? Olive is always looking to embrace technologies that improve success rates. Along with using the most advanced techniques for egg freezing and thawing, Olive is the first fertility clinic in Western Canada to offer Violet, a ground-breaking technology, that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to better predict the success of outcomes for patients undergoing elective egg freezing. 6) What are the safety protocols for frozen egg storage? At Olive frozen eggs are stored in a dedicated secure facility with 24 /7 monitoring of temperature, nitrogen level, and security. See more

Frozen Embryos vs Frozen Eggs pros and cons Pros for frozen eggs > You do not have to commit your eggs to being fertilized with any sperm > You have full ownership of your eggs... > You may choose when you want to use them > If you have a partner that you intend to have a family with at a later time, you may choose to freeze embryos instead of your eggs. Embryos are fertilized eggs that have developed for 3 to 5 days. Pros for frozen embryos > You know how many viable embryos you would have frozen for a round of IVF > You may consider genetic testing of embryos to disclose the proportion of embryos that were viable for use at a transfer > You have the opportunity to consider more treatment cycles at an earlier stage to obtain more viable embryos > You share ownership with your partner Neither option promises a guarantee of success, as we are limited primarily by the number of eggs or embryos we have. #oliveeggfreezing . . . #reproduction #fertilityawareness #infertilitysucks #infertilityawareness #infertilityjourney #infertilitysupport #ttccommunity #ttcsisters #ttcwithinfertility #thisisinfertility #ttcjourney #eggfreeze #fertilitypreservation #eggfreezing #fertilitysupport #womenshealth #oliveeggfreezing #olivefertility #vancouverfertility See more

What is the microbiome, and who are EMMA and ALICE? May 17, 2021 Most people are familiar with the fact that our gastrointestinal systems are colonized by bacteria. All the way from the mouth to the anus, the long tube known as the gut is full of bugs! Your skin is also covered. In fact, it has been estimated that there are more than 10 times as many microbes that live in/on our bodies than our bodies’ own cells. Gross, right?...Continue reading

I'm ready to use my eggs. When you are ready to get pregnant your eggs will be fertilized and an embryo will be transferred into your uterus in a regular IVF procedure. Your eggs can remain frozen indefinitely until you are ready to conceive. At that time, they will be thawed, fertilized, and hopefully developed to a 5-6 day old embryo, called a blastocyst.... Once you’ve had your 8-week scan, you graduate from Olive. We will refer you to the doctor or midwife and they will be following you through your pregnancy. #oliveeggfreezing . . . #reproduction #fertilityawareness #infertilitysucks #infertilityawareness #infertilityjourney #infertilitysupport #ttccommunity #ttcsisters #ttcwithinfertility #thisisinfertility #ttcjourney #eggfreeze #fertilitypreservation #eggfreezing #fertilitysupport #womenshealth #oliveeggfreezing #olivefertility #vancouverfertility See more

Olive offers on site long term egg storage. The safety and security of your frozen eggs is of the utmost importance to us. We have continuously monitored cryotanks with sensors that ensure proper tank temperatures and liquid nitrogen levels. While we have back-up generators, your eggs are safe even in a power failure, as our tanks use liquid nitrogen to maintain the temperature and don’t rely on electricity. Storage Costs After you have had your initial appointment,... you will meet with a patient financial advisor. They will work with you to help you understand the financial portion of your journey. The financial advisor will review the cost of your treatment and storage, as well as answering any questions you may have. Our aim is to provide you with all the information you will need to make this part of your treatment go as smoothly as possible. #oliveeggfreezing . . . #reproduction #fertilityawareness #infertilitysucks #infertilityawareness #infertilityjourney #infertilitysupport #ttccommunity #ttcsisters #ttcwithinfertility #thisisinfertility #ttcjourney #eggfreeze #fertilitypreservation #eggfreezing #fertilitysupport #womenshealth #oliveeggfreezing #olivefertility #vancouverfertility See more

This is a heartbreaking story. IVF with preimplantation testing of embryos for gene mutations like the one this family carries, could potentially eliminate it from their family. That means future generations would not need to live with a "ticking time bomb."

Freezing eggs vs freezing embryos: which is better? December 17, 2020 https://www.olivefertility.com//freezing-eggs-vs-freezing- More women than men are enrolled in medical school these days, a long overdue sign of the times that we may be finally approaching equality (albeit, with still a long, long, way to go). Yet while the socioeconomic tides may be turning, the biological clock ticks on. The hard-fought opportunities that are now available to young people with ovaries...Continue reading

Guest post by Stephanie Curran, instructor with @mindfulnessforfertility This holiday season, we’re all being asked to let go of so much....how we normally gather and celebrate with loved ones, many of our usual traditions, and for those of us with a fertility journey, yet another holiday with not having grown our families in the way our hearts long for. What if rather than struggling against "letting it go", instead we choose to "let it be". ... The acronym RAIN, first coined about 20 years ago by a meditation teacher named Michele McDonald, is an easy-to-remember tool for practicing mindfulness and self-compassion. It has four steps: Recognize what is going on (what is here now? in the body, mind, heart?) Allow the experience to be there, just as it is (can I invite a softening around whatever is here...just the invitation to soften is a powerful act of kindness) Investigate with a gentle, curious attention (opening to whatever is arising with care and bringing a beginner's mind to our experience) Nurture with loving presence (what's needed here now? What is the kindest way to be with myself in this present moment?) The ability to meet this moment starts with remembering that a loving space is available to us even in difficult times. Meditation teacher Vinny Ferraro says, Compassion is simply a kind, friendly presence in the face of what’s difficult. The power of compassion is that in allowing us to be with both the good and the difficult, we give ourselves the ability to approach life by turning toward it, not away from it. And when we turn toward life, we can be informed by each new moment and, in that way, meet challenges with skill, kindness, and compassion. We all have within us the natural ability to slow down and navigate the next few weeks with care and kindness. Be kind. Be gentle. ...towards others but especially with ourselves. #mindfulnessforfertility #elements_health_centre @elements_health_centre

from Dr Lora Shahine, Seattle 'COVID vaccine causes infertility’ statement is base in fear - not science As soon as I saw the post ‘Head of Pfizer Research: Could Vaccine is Female Sterilization’ I panicked. My head said ‘Fake news, this is ridiculous, time to start researching, and sh@t this is going to make my patients’s anxiety blow up.' But there is a little tiny part of me that also thought ‘OMG Is this real?’... Short story: This claim is false (keep reading) but why is it so easy to belief a lie (keep reading further). The claim is that COVID vaccines will cause infertility because of a shared amino acid sequence in the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 and a placental protein and the immune system will not be able to tell the difference between the virus and the placenta and will attack both. A healthy placenta is vital to a healthy pregnancy and if attacked would result in miscarriage. This sounds plausible but: 1. The sequence is too short for the immune system to confuse it with placental proteins - it’s 5 amino acids and the autoimmune B-cell epitopes require >35% identity and >50-80 amnio acid sequences to react. T cell epitopes can be shorter but negative selection in the thymus deletes auto-reactive T cells (thank you @dr.noc for answering my immune questions this week) 2. If this were true - we’d expect to see more miscarriages in COVID infected patients and we are not We absolutely need to be cautious with any new vaccine or medication. I value the process of evidence-based science and medicine meaning - you do not accept a statement as truth without understanding, research and questioning until proof is apparent. I do NOT appreciate blasting headlines and puff pieces that capture readers with fear. Why is it so easy to believe a lie? Because it’s easier to understand ‘Vaccines are bad, vaccines cause infertility and miscarriage’ is easy. It’s hard to read the scientific research and much less understand it. Lies play on our fear and have an agenda whether it’s getting more clicks on a website or distract from other news or our own thoughts. It’s great to question science but let’s leave fear, inflammatory language, and click bait out of it. http://lorashahine.com

Dealing With Unsolicited Fertility Advice From Others November 6, 2020 by @drpaulturek They’re probably just trying to help, but getting an earful of advice from others about your infertility issue can be incredibly uncomfortable. And belittling. And distressing. Like you haven’t already been endlessly researching options and talking with providers. Untargeted infertility advice is often way off targetand it just keeps coming. But, although no one has been through exactl...y what you have, they may still be able to support you. Eight Ways Out How should you react to statements that seem to rub salt in your emotional wounds? Realize that you may never be able to respond to the statement, You can always adopt. This may just not be part of your vocabulary. When you hear that What happens will happen, remember that the source of the advice is not God or Darwin and that hope floats all boats. When confronted with Look on the bright side, understand that it’s OK to pass on bright things for now. Let the statement, At least it’s not cancer reminds you that not everyone can validate the experiences of others. Forgive them. And remember to hug the friend that says, I wish there was something I could say to make things better. Know your limits when others talk about their pregnancies or their children in your presence. And kindly excuse yourself from the conversation if those limits are reached. Find ways to connect and communicate with others on topics that you used to enjoy talking about. Try to think of advice from friends as a prickly form of support which could make it all a bit more palatable and tolerable. I’m convinced that infertility affects lives just as much as cancer does. But not everybody knows that. It can take a herculean effort to simply survive, and even more to thrive. So, do what you have to do to get through this because just surviving will make you an infinitely stronger human being. In the words of Sarah Lewis, We thrive not when we’ve done it all, but when we still have more to do. https://www.theturekclinic.com//dealing-with-unsolicited/ Photo from Pexels by Gra See more

Clinic rules October 6, 2020 These COVID times are hard times. They are. We are trying our very best to stay open to keep helping people. A condition of staying open is that we do not permit non-essential visitors to the clinic. We cannot allow partners, children or other support people in the clinic, sadly. Everyone must wear a mask. No one can come into the clinic (staff or patient) who does not pass the COVID screening questions. ... Every day people are still asking us to make exceptions to these rules. I get it this is a hard process made harder if you cannot have the people you need around you. Ultimately, though, we are choosing between staying open and breaking the rules. Everyone at Olive hates saying no to these daily requests, but we must. So, please, please respect our guidelines. These guidelines help keep people safe and are not meant to be punitive or unreasonable. We just want to stay open and help people grow their families! 1. Freezing eggs when you are younger is ideal and certainly under the age of 38 is best. Egg freezing after the age of 38 has a low success rate and is nearly zero after the age of 40. 2. The process begins in exactly the same way as traditional IVF, which involves injecting medications that stimulate egg growth to the point that they can be harvested. However, instead of fertilizing the eggs with sperm, they are frozen unfertilized and stored until a woman is ready to ...conceive sometime in the future. At that point, the eggs are thawed and fertilized to hopefully result in viable embryos that can then be transferred into the uterus. 3. One of our physicians will insert an ultrasound-guided needle through the top of the vagina into your ovaries. The fluid is drained from each follicle and looked at under a microscope for eggs. 4. A technique of fast freezing, called "vitrification," proved better than slow freezing. Studies over the past few years have demonstrated that vitrified eggs and embryos have a higher pregnancy rate than slow frozen ones. #oliveeggfreezing . . #reproduction #fertilityawareness #infertilitysucks #infertilityawareness #infertilityjourney #infertilitysupport #ttccommunity #ttcsisters #ttcwithinfertility #thisisinfertility #ttcjourney #eggfreeze #fertilitypreservation #eggfreezing #fertilitysupport #womenshealth #oliveeggfreezing #olivefertility #vancouverfertility See more
