Today is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. Although we cannot ease the pain of losing a child, we at Oliver’s Funeral Home strive to support these families in any way we can. That is why we cover the majority of the funeral service costs for those experiencing this tragedy. We invite you to join us, along with many others around the world, to take part in the global Wave of Light. Tonight, at 7pm, light a candle and leave it burning for at least one hour in remembrance of all the infants who have died during pregnancy, at, during or after birth.

This month, instead of introducing you to a staff member, we are saying goodbye to one. At the end of September, Gene Krause is officially retiring after 41 years in the funeral industry. Gene moved to Grande Prairie to accept a position at Olivers in 1985. He soon became involved in the community through the Alliance Church, Singing Christmas Tree, theatre, Board of Directors for Burden Bearers Counselling, modelling, sports and Rotary. Gene is often recognized throughout t...he community because of his involvement with Olivers. He has served countless families over the years as he helped them plan a service to honour their loved one. A licenced funeral director and embalmer, he managed Olivers for many years and co-owned the company from November 2011 to February 2017. What do Genes co-workers say about him? He likes organization and things to be perfect, which I appreciate. He has a connection with people. He is loved. Never gets too excited about anything. - LoAnn I love Genes sense of humour. His knowledge and history in the business make him great to learn from. Gene has a special presence and an amazing energy. He is a wonderful, kind person and I enjoy being with him. I feel only too fortunate to have been able to work with Gene. Shaney Gene has one of the best work ethics in a person that I have ever worked with. He has a gift for working with families, and no work is ever too much. Liesa Even though Gene is known by many in the community, he is very down to earth. I appreciate how he engages in conversation on a personal level. It has been truly an honour to get to know him. Nathan Genes love and dedication for the people of Grande Prairie is like no one else. Tracy For many people in our community, Gene has been synonymous with Olivers and funeral service. We are sad to see him go, but are excited for him as he steps into this new chapter of his life.

Our Grief Counselor, Kim Talmey, is hosting a second online Surviving the Holidays event. If you, like many of us, are struggling to get through the Holidays after a loss, sign up below.

In order to comply with the new COVID regulations, our office will be strictly appointment only for the next while. Appointments will be required to be made for all requests, even for what seems like small or easy requests. Please understand we are not doing this to be difficult, but to be safe and follow the regulations put in place by the Alberta Government and the recommendations put in place by the Chief Medical Officer of Health. If you need to pick up something from... our office, please call the front desk to book a time to do so. Due to current restrictions, funerals/visitations/wakes/graveside services are limited to 10 people maximum. This includes family, friends, and anyone participating in the service (ex: minister) but excludes our staff. No reception services, or luncheons may be held at this time. Today we remembered Greg and Cindy Hickok. Greg was a firefighter with the county fire department. Due to the need for social distancing and gathering restrictions, not everyone who wanted to attend was able to come into the building. Many firefighters donned masks and gathered outside of the building where the service was broadcast on a large screen. They sent Greg and Cindy off with honours.

This month, let me introduce you to LoAnn Huether. LoAnn has many talents, and can be found working in multiple areas of the Funeral Home. Most people will recognize her as our Tea Room Hostess. She arranges food and drink, visits with people as they come through, and cleans up afterwards. LoAnn also changes the seasonal dcor for the funeral home, does cosmetics and hair for peoples loved ones, creates gift baskets for charity auctions, wreaths for festival of trees, and ha...s even been known to sing and play piano at funerals and our Christmas Candlelight Service. LoAnn loves people and you can see it in how she approaches her work. She always does her best, and people gravitate toward her kind and bubbly personality. LoAnn said I take pride in everything I do. My greatest accomplishment is making someones loved one look as natural as I can so the family feels that their loved one looks like themself. What do LoAnns co-workers say about her? What an amazing gifted lady. Always feel great working with LoAnn. God truly blesses us when LoAnn is working. Ernie LoAnn, I want to mature into a woman like you.
