One Paw at a Time: Dog Trainer 19.04.2021

Hey guys! We are currently on vacation until Friday! Messages may be delayed but we will get back as soon as we can!

One Paw at a Time: Dog Trainer 11.04.2021

Totally had to steal this photo of Ozzy that Louise shared! Look at how proud he looks doing a place command on one of his trail walks You can utilize place absolutely anywhere! Putting your dog up to a task and placing them in new environments will help boost their confidence, look to you as a strong pack leader and ultimately improve focus in distracting areas. It will also improve the trust, bond and relationship with your dog! I just recently had a class with a Dach...shund puppy named Tanner and will hopefully remember to take videos next lesson. Tanner worked through many place challenges on his training walk and was much more confident and looking to his handler for guidance by the end of the lesson! Place work is for all dogs big and small! Love seeing training updates and photos of clients working with their dogs or going on adventures

Stark, Raiven, Ohana and Bentley Stunning pups!

One Paw at a Time: Dog Trainer 05.11.2020

Nothing like a good group of dogs and a beautiful morning! The workers next door had a good chuckle when they saw that the Shepherds multiplied overnight Always make sure to supervise play with multiple dogs! It is up to you to control the energy of the pack and let the dogs know when they need to relax and when play time is allowed. If we just let the dogs figure it out it can cause some serious problems! Advocate and step in when needed! Know your dogs limits and boundaries, always supervise and know the group of dogs you are socializing with! Bentley, Ohana, Raiven and Stark enjoying the beautiful morning we had! Going out now to enjoy a quick tea with the dogs before they head in the kennels to have a nap while I do some afternoon classes. Such a gorgeous day and we are soaking up every ounce we can!

One Paw at a Time: Dog Trainer 26.10.2020

Bentley is spending some time with us and we absolutely love having him visit! I had a few classes in the afternoon so did not have much daylight to play in but the pups enjoyed some fun before bed! It is pretty awesome having three shepherds here at the moment! Ohana is visiting with her Mom. Bentley is such a good boy and falls right back into routine when he is here. When I got home we had a pretty busy evening here with a few friends over and Bentley was a gem! Ohana, Bentley, Raiven and Stark

Gatsby board and train! Having some fun with Gatsby walking around the church and back walkway. He has come such a long way with his commands. Look at that focus!

One Paw at a Time: Dog Trainer 25.08.2020

Lola ecollar board and train! Lola and I have been working a lot on engagement with handler and focus around distractions. We have the neighbors out next door and had a few people walk by and Lola could careless! She has come such a long way with her training since starting with a board and train at 4 months. She is 6 months now and learning ecollar communication for her second board and train. She has a solid foundation and is a confident girl who knows to look to the owne...r for direction. Her parents have done a great job of keeping up with her skills. With the added training and socialization this time around, she will continue to grow into a well balanced pup. Training is constant with our dogs to make sure we are keeping them properly stimulated. Good behaviour is only accomplished by multiple repetitions and sticking with the rules and boundaries you set in place for your dog. Whether you adopt a dog or start from a puppy, training starts immediately! If you put in the training and are dedicated with your expecations for the first 6 to 12 months of the dogs life, you will have a solid foundation with your dog. It takes a lot to prepare our dogs for our crazy world but with proper guidance you and your dog will succeed! Teach them the commands and work in multiple different areas and around different people to keep expecations the same. We never stop training our dogs as there is always something to learn and we need to fulfill their needs everyday to help them succeed. Teaching our dogs to look to us for guidance and commands will ensure a stable relationship for you and your dog. They don’t control a situation, you do! Super proud of Lola girl and she has been such a pleasure to train, work and spend time with! She is such a big teddy bear

One Paw at a Time: Dog Trainer 18.08.2020

Daisy ecollar board and train! I am so proud of how far Daisy has come with her training. She has truly come out of her shell and is turning into a confident dog. She is much more handler focussed and is no longer concerned with the loud noises or movements around her. Daisy was working on a shorter leash outside for the first little while to do quick corrections when her brain would focus elsewhere. She loved to sniff the ground or if anything caught her eye or she heard s...omething in the bushes she would startle and stare at the object. A few times she would try to run out at the end of the leash to inspect what was going on. We also worked a lot on slowing down with her recall. She used to come over and either jump up on me or run right past me. She now does a nice sit and holds focus. She would also get herself quite anxious and would sometimes start whining or hopping up in anticipation of the food or wanting affection with her anxious state. She is now understanding whining is unacceptable and jumping into the humans space is not allowed! Super proud of this little girl and love working with her!

One Paw at a Time: Dog Trainer 31.07.2020

Gatsby ecollar board and train! Gatsby being an absolute rockstar today! He is so engaged with me and is responding beautifully when I call him. Gatsby and I worked A LOT on his focus and engagement towards the handler the first week. He was quite distracted outside and would not respond unless I gave leash pressure. Gatsby is now responding to his name and understanding that when I call his name I expect focus and you to check in. He is also watching where I am going and c...hoosing to follow me rather than pull away and make his own choices. It is important that we stay calm but firm with our expectations with our dogs. Short sweet to the point make it black-and-white. If a dog is not giving you focus when asked, it is very difficult to get them to follow through with your commands. We have to teach our dogs the value of handler focus and contact and teach them that we are their source for everything and they can turn to us for guidance. Super proud of Gatsbys progress over the last few weeks

Had a fantastic time during our first pack walk up and running again since Covid! We were joined by Peter and his dog Murphy and Brad, his son and their dog Ben! Raiven had a sore leg after her MAJIK tournament on the weekend and was quite comfy so she sat this one out! We took a nice walk around Millbrook and downtown. We also took a nice hike through the Millbrook Valley trails. Great company and the dogs had a great time! Stay tuned for details on our next pack walk happening at the end of October hope to see you there!

Service dogs are such a big part of our disabled community! They are amazing companions and medical equipment for those who need the assistance! However I am finding nowadays that service dogs seem to be this glorified thing where people think it’s acceptable to bring any dog into public and call them a service dog. This puts every handler who needs the assistance of a fully trained service dog at risk. I have created this video to hopefully spread some awareness of just a ...few things service dogs do to assist our disabled community. A lot of people rely on the aid of a service dog to assist with their disability every hour of the day. When you see a service dog out working in public they are working and focussing on their owner. Looking for specific cues in order to assist. This is why it is so important to ignore a service dog and their handler. A fully trained service dog will not be interested in anything around them other than their handler. I am seeing a lot more dogs in non pet friendly establishments (ie grocery store, mall) who are pulling on leash and barking at myself or Raiven. The owner usually then starts to try and bribe the dog for their attention and try distracting them from whatever they are going at. At this point me and my girl walk calmly by as the dog is lunging at the end of their leash wearing a ‘service dog’ vest. Service dogs should not be lashing out and disregarding their owner. A dog who is out of control and not tasking for its owner should not be allowed in public. If other service dogs see each other in public there should be no reaction and the dogs should calmly be able to pass by and/or be in the same room as each other and focussing on their owner. Service dogs are prescribed to someone who needs medical assistance for their disability. At this point the dogs are put into training and are trained for upwards to TWO YEARS!! This creates a bombproof dog in every situation and they are taught numerous tasks to help assist the owner in their day to day life. Please watch this video and I hope it helps spread awareness of just a few daily tasks that service dogs can do to assist our disabled community! I have taught Raiven to do majority of service dog tasks because I also train other service dogs. It makes the training easier to show other people with a dog who already knows how to do it. With that being said, Raiven alerts to my heart rate and chemical changes regarding my headaces,IBS and dizzy spells every day. She will alert when I space out or having a depression or anxious spell. She assists in getting my shoes and keys before heading out the door when asked. She also stabilizes myself if I get dizzy when out in public Feel free to share this video to spread awareness about our amazing service dog community!

Chance ecollar board and train! Chance has completed his two week board and train and I am excited to bring him home! Hes done such a great job these past few weeks and picked up very well on all commands! He was a little pushy at times but overall did a fantastic job. Here we are doing one of our last ecollar sessions outside and Chance is enjoying his time with me and responding very well to commands!... Well done bud!

One Paw at a Time: Dog Trainer 05.04.2020

Meet Buster! Buster has been in private training for the last few weeks and he has come such a long way with his skills. His parents have done a great job setting down the new rules and boundaries and implementing new commands and expectations for Buster. His parents also wanted to have a little bit more off leash control and freedom so they decided to go with E-Collar training. Buster has already spent a few weeks in my private training program so he only spent five days wit...h me to learn the proper communication with the E-Collar. Buster did so well when he was here! Check out the clip below to see Buster in action. We are even presented with a distraction about 50 feet from us when we went on a little walk behind the houses. He was easily re-called back and even when the other dog was pulling and let out a couple of whines towards Buster, he kept his cool and focused on me! Buster has since gone home and is doing very well after his home lesson!

Lola, Daisy, Chance and Gatsby board and train! All current board and trains are able to be out together and enjoy quiet time! All dogs learn at a different pace but it is amazing to aee them all come together at a certain point to work and relax as a pack. Lola is here for her second time at six months for her ecollar board and train. She has picked up on the ecollar communication very well and has done a fantastic job with her recall. She was pretty good around a group of... dogs to begin with but a few times would try and sneak off to go and say hi to the others! Gatsby and Daisy have settled in well at this point to routine and are becoming more confident and handler focussed each day! Super proud of their progress especially around so many distractions! Chance as well has become totally relaxed here and knows how to chillax! Well done everyone! Wish your dog was this calm around others? Want a dog who responds to your commands the first time? Contact me today and sign up for our famous board and train program! Spots fill quickly and it is first come first serve. Only few spots left for November and December! One Paw at a Time: Dog Trainer 20.02.2020

Gatsby, Daisy and Chance board and train! Gatsby and Daisy have worked so hard on their impulse control and learning to slow down and relax! Anytime they would hear or see the door open, it would trigger excitement. Anytime I would walk past they would get up and try to come into my space. Daisy was not highly distracted by the cats but needed a few redirections to learn to ignore. Gatsby needed a little more work with the cats as he loved to try and sniff them or pounce! I... worked quite a bit on raising Daisy’s confidence so she would not get discouraged with corrections or guidance. She was also quite klingy and liked to try and follow me because of her insecurites. It is nice to see her finally relaxing and not worries about things going on around her. Gatsby has also learned the value in the place command. He was quite pushy the first few days and liked to stand up a lot. Any noise or movement would also trigger him to move or try to inspect the object. He is now handler focussed and only needs verbal redirections if needed. Chance is solid with his place now. He is also ecollar trained and responding very well when asked for attention and given commands. He is a goofy boy but has learned how to control his excitement. He relaxes very quickly and knows to follow through with direction. Super proud of his progress! Well done One Paw board and trains! Wish your dog was this calm around others? Want a dog who responds to your commands the first time? Contact me today and sign up for our famous board and train program! Spots fill quickly and it is first come first serve. Only few spots left for November and December! Becky 416-629-9972 [email protected]

Chance ecollar board and train! Here is Chance and I working on his recall outside. He has come such a long way with his focus towards the handler and learning that he can enjoy himself outside but is expected to clue in when asked. In order to get a solid recall from your dog you must do multiple long line exercises with your dog to make sure they are understanding the full concept of the recall. The first few times you do the exercise, the dog it’s not going to know what ...is fully going on. There will be a lot of leash pressure, a shorter leash and more frequent recalls with the dog. Once they are cluing in every time to their name then you can start to name the command. We do not want to overuse the recall command especially when the dog is not responding 90% to 100% of the time. This will actually teach your dog to ignore the command rather than respond to it. Super proud of how far this boy has come with his training! He is such a goof! Well done Chance!

Needed a good water dish for the dogs downstairs and of course The Rusty Dog Feeder Company does it again! Love my new dish and it is nice and elevated for all our guests as well. (Smaller toy breeds are given a seperate dish on the floor when visiting)

One Paw at a Time: Dog Trainer 02.12.2019

Made a housecall to see Zan, Breezy and Lucaya for nailtrims! Always a good time when I get to see these guys. All three of these pups were in a board and train and before training they would not getting along. There was constant fighting within the pack. Now you can tell they all live harmoniously and happy as a pack together. Always happy to see these guys and it’s great to see them together. Mom and dad do a great job of sticking to rules and making sure the dogs have firm leader ship at all times

One Paw at a Time: Dog Trainer 21.11.2019

Chance was such a good boy during his groom! He was so calm and enjoyed every minute of it. He was so happy to show off his new looks after his haircut

One Paw at a Time: Dog Trainer 30.10.2019

Ruckus is here visiting for the night! When he got here the dogs enjoyed some nice social time outside to get their willies out before going in. We love it when this boy comes to visit. Raiven especially has a soft spot for Ruckus. Definitely one of her besties There was also a wedding happening next door. Do you think the dogs cared? Nope!

One Paw at a Time: Dog Trainer 13.10.2019

Chance ecollar board and train! Something clicked in this big boys mind yesterday with his place command! The first 2 to 3 days of training we have been utilizing the tether exercise and introducing the place command. We have also been working on a few handler games and getting Chance more engaged with myself and responding to commands. He has been stubborn and hesitant to offer the down command in the first few days so I wasn’t pushing him that far. Today he offered the do...wn and relaxed all on his own! Tethering and setting rules and boundaries is so important for a dog! After only a few days, Chance to seeing a lot of value in the place and just relaxing on the place cot. I started introducing my dogs and cats on Wednesday and yesterday he was able to start working around them and also have my cats doing their normal thing. Chance is not an overly pushy dog and he does not lash out and react suddenly with many movements inside. He is generally pretty calm once when you establish the boundaries. However the first few days he was a little nervous of certain sounds he would hear and so we have been working on raising his confidence before introducing certain distractions. Chance is progressing very well with his training inside and he is able to have a dropped leash and start working on some real world expectations. He has picked up very well on my body language and is starting to respond very well to the handler after only a few days of training. His outside work still needs some improvement. When he is on his leash he is more interested in the smells and the sounds around him so we are working on increasing his focus and drive towards the handler outside. We are also working on establishing his boundaries and understanding how far he is allowed to go from the handler at any given point. He will eventually be E-Collar trained as well for more reliability and to help with his boundary training. Although Chance is a very laid-back and calm boy he still needs a lot of work with his confidence and especially his focus and excitement with certain distractions and areas! It’s a pretty long video below but I got super excited that he was progressing so well so I started to work his brain on a few minor distractions with his dropped leash! I simply was just going to work on more of his place command and some handler games but he was offering certain commands and had such a nice calm demeanour I had to work with it! Excited to see him progress even more and he is even starting to show his goofy self more and more each day. He loves to play bow and prance toward you and will sit right at your feet when it’s time for snuggles! He also got his groom tonight! I was too relaxed last night so I decided to groom him today and man he looks like a totally different boy. Stay tuned

I absolutely love getting updates from clients but I also love getting updates on dogs who have been adopted through One Paw. Murphy has been doing absolutely fantastic since she was adopted by her new family! The first few weeks of transitioning to her new home was great and we worked through minor hiccups. Murphy has been in her new home for quite a few months now and she continues to learn and grow every day from her mom’s continued guidance. It is amazing to stay updated... and see her new adventures. It’s important to realize that sometimes things might not work out when we bring a dog into our home. However I think it is our responsibility to realize that if changes need to happen we need to be responsible for the outcome. Murphy’s previous owner had a very tough decision to make but in the end instead of surrendering Murphy to a shelter or put her in to the Humane Society, they decided to surrender her to me. This is a responsible decision in this case as they know I will prepare the dog to where she needs to be to find her new home and also she will still stay in a home atmosphere/foster situation. This takes a lot of the stress away from a surrender situation. If you can surrender to a good local rescue or if a training facility offers surrender cases, this would be ideal. The dog will then get the same daily routine and possibly some new rules and expectations set in place which will only prepare them for their new home. Also a lot of rescues or non-for profit shelters/non-kill shelters usually have a policy in place if the dog does not work out then it will be surrendered back to them. This will hopefully avoid the the dog being surrendered into different shelters or humane societies, in rare cases that they are bounced from home to home. Super happy I was able to bring this family together and I look forward to each update that I see. Congratulations again to Jenn and her family to their newest fur member and extra special thanks to giving Murphy such a fantastic loving home
